Are we getting out of hand with this record stuff?

Brees broke Marinos record and will go down as the only one to do so in 20 years and I couldn't be happier for him. Does anybody else here think its a bit dangerous to keep any player in the game strictly to break a record this close to the playoffs?
Im not talking about the Atlanta game, thats been accomplished, I am talking about the Carolina game. Am I the only one who thinks it would be stupid to keep Brees and the starters in for the sheer point of ensuring Brees keeps the record if the Rams game gets way out of hand?
The only record I want is a Super Bowl. I don't want to risk losing a key player for the sake of some record. Are our coaches and us fans putting too much into this record stuff for our own good?

Eh, that's kinda hard to say. I really doubt Brees will play much if the Niners completely take over the Rams.

I know the coaches have a job to do, and that's to win as many games as you can, and go as far as you can in the playoffs. But to deny a player of a record that may stand for years would be very difficult. As a kid, you are taught to be the BEST you can be, not just in sports, but in life as well. Getting a shot at a record, especially a mojor record, is something that you may have one opportunity in your entire lifetime to achieve. And to pull a player when he's right on the cusp of breaking a record would, in my opinion, a great disservice to that player. Let them play. Let Brees play long enough to keep it out of reach of Brady. It was sad that he was only 15 yards away in 2008 knowing he may never get that close again. Luckily for Drew he has another shot at it. Don't take it away from him again. Let these players be the best they can be.

The starters will play as long as there is a shot at the 2 seed

If Payton says in a press conference that he is not going to be keeping an eye on the scoreboard of the 49ers game, then I'd say that is almost a 100% certainty that he WILL be keeping an eye on the 49ers scoreboard at the Panthers game. Keep in mind, #2 seed is still a real possibility at this point, it may not be likely but it has not been taken off the table yet, so you can't just throw it away and say you don't want it. It's nothing to do with the Brees record, it's the #2 seed.

The 49ers play low scoring games and therefore don't have as much margin for error. Call me insane but I think the Rams have a decent shot to spoil it for the Niners or keep it close. So I think we'll be keeping Brees in.

I'm not a big fan of resting him period. He's a football player treat him like one. If he isn't hurt why bench him?

Not to mention I'd be kinda pissed if I traveled back home to watch the last game and starters were benched....

I think the stars of the show should play some football. I also think it's good to keep them going.

On the other side, if we lost a playoff game and everyone says "Brees looked cold" then the critics would come out asking why Payton rested a team that was on a serious rollll into the playoffs...
