Jeff Fisher may try to get Gregg Williams to join him

NFL.com news: Expect Fisher on sidelines; Cowher, Gruden likely staying put

Wait till we see how this playoff run goes...

I would be for letting Williams go if we don't have a stellar post-season.

Bring on Spags OR Romeo Crennel

|Mitch| 01-02-2012 11:28 AM

I think Romeo Crennel may be the lead runner to get the Chiefs permanent head coaching job...

WhoDat!656 01-02-2012 11:29 AM

As long as GW is out of the division, and hopefully the conference, I wont be too upset if he leaves.

saintfan 01-02-2012 11:35 AM

I guess I'm on the fence about GW. We did win a SB with him, and he has brought a swagger (although missing at times this year) to the defensive side of the ball.

Is it really his fault that we get next to zero pressure with our d line? I don't know, to be honest. I see that as the single biggest problem with our D. I'm all for getting someone assuming they can (could) fix the issues we have, but if we were generating any pressure at all without the requirement of the blitz, would we even be having this conversation?

Cruize 01-02-2012 11:53 AM

Williams has done well with getting the most out of the below average to average talent on the defense. But, he hasn't got much out of the players with the above average talent on the squad. Overall, he's done a very good job.

Pete 01-02-2012 11:59 AM

He'll be back!I believe the mad scientist is still experimenting.....(To Be Cont'd)

halloween 65 01-02-2012 12:08 PM

I think if we win the Superbowl his stock will be off the chart and hard to keep. Unless he loves it here and just wants to keep winning here, I thinks he pulls the plug. I wanted his head earlier this year but he has started to get the D rollin' and I can't knock him for that. He is a good DC and I hope he stays.

mikesaintfan 01-02-2012 12:15 PM

depends how the post season goes...if we win the SB then GW comes back...if the "D" drops a stinker then he will be gone imho

papz 01-02-2012 12:21 PM

Our defense has played much better with Junior finally showing some consistency and Martez getting up to speed with the playbook. Our irrelevant defensive rankings would have looked much better if they would have gelled sooner. We also had two new DT's, a shortened offseason, and a few injuries. Williams has shown he can get the job done... which is why he's such a valued commodity.

Although he is replaceable... he's been good and I rather keep him here as long as Loomis/Payton wants him here. We target another pass rusher this offseason and we'll be back atop those irrelevant rankings in no time.

Adding to 13-3 are the only rankings I'm concerned about.

I wouldn't be to quick to get rid of GW.

Budsdrinker 01-02-2012 01:55 PM

I can't see GW leaving for the same position. Maybe if he was offered a head coaching job but I don't think he will be offered one.

Can't believe some of you think he is easily replaceable. You do remember how bad our last two d coordinators have been, right?

NAILED IT!!!!

He's mentioned several times that he likes it here because the front office respects him and works with him to give him what he needs to succeed.

I agree 100% Buds that only a HC offer is gonna persuade GW to leave. As long as we pay him what he's worth as a DC, he'll remain a Saint.

halloween 65 01-02-2012 04:03 PM

I agree with him being not easily replaced but he may want to go somewhere like the Bucs, I hate to say this but he could and would have their D turning heads in no time at all, a few draft choices and they could be really good under a DC like Williams. It's going to come down to what he wants to do.

From what I can see (which admittedly is extremely limited), GW is too much of a loose cannon to play a HC role. He seems pretty tightly wound too ( punching people who try to give him a hug ).

Sorry, but weird.

Sorry, but weird.

That is exactly why I think he didn't do well as a HC and why GM's will probably shy away from giving him another try.

He was born to be a "knock 'em the F*** out" Defensive Coordinator.

He's found a good home and I doubt he leaves it anytime soon.

I Think GW Can Get Predictable At Times...I Will Forever Be Thankful For Him Because Of His Helping Us Get A Title But I Guess All Good Things Must Come To An End

homerj07 01-02-2012 05:25 PM

For all of our griping (& damn - do we gripe sometimes). The "D" has really come up big at times.

Is it the defense that GW runs OR is it the lack of personel to run the "D" that has made them look... poor at times?

I dont know.

I agree with the consensus that he would be hard to replace!!

FinSaint 01-02-2012 06:02 PM

I would be intrigued by the possibility of bringing in Spagnuolo to replace GW if that becomes necessary. He did a great job with the Giants' D and the Saints did lose to the Rams mostly because of their D stepping up.

SaintsBro 01-02-2012 06:47 PM

Well I don't know the inner details about how tight Fisher is with Williams, but I'll say this...it depends on the team Fisher ends up going to, whether GW is in the mix or not...the unspoken deal is that if you want Gregg Williams, you pretty much have to take his son Blake on your coaching staff as well. Payton has found a way to make this work, but I know a LOT of front offices out there would balk at that type of arrangement, "hire me AND my son, we are a package deal".... GW can theoretically take a job pretty much anywhere he likes, more money etc., but I think he doesn't go anywhere else besides the Saints, unless it's to be a head coach AND his son gets a promotion and/or coordinator type position that moves his son up in the football world. Just my two cents on it.
