Trotter to be released?

Quote:

The Redskins and C Cory Raymer have come to an agreement on a three-year contract worth $3.1 million, according to the Washington Post. Raymer returns to Washington, where he played from 1995 through 2001, after being released by the Chargers last week. He’s expected to vie for a starting spot in the middle of the line with Lennie Friedman. The signing could mean last year’s starting center, Larry Moore, could be toast. Releasing Moore would save the team about $1.3 million under the salary cap. … The team is waiting to hear back about an offer made to Panthers LB Greg Favors, who also is being pursued by the Jaguars. … Giants LB Brandon Short visited the team yesterday and also is in the mix, and former Bears LB Warrick Holdman reportedly is set to visit the team Monday. Why would the team be going after all these linebackers, especially ones with experience inside? It’s speculation, but MLB Jeremiah Trotter could be let go after June 1, which would save the team nearly $3 million in cap space. Of course, by doing so, they would take a $4.6 million hit next year. Trotter signed a seven-year, $36 million contract in 2002.
This would cure what ails us in the middle. Then we could have the freedom to trade up and get Eli.

Why bring in a overrated, overpriced MLB, when chances are we can get either Jonathon Vilma or D.J. Williams to play the middle? ;) :) :D ;)

What does this have to do with trading up and getting Eli? It said Trotter could be cut after June 1st, two months after the draft. It will have zero effect on what we do come draft day.

Besides, we would be better off getting Vilma. Trotter is very over-rated and has had two bad years in a row.

I\'m really not getting the fascination with either Gamble or Vilma.
One hasn\'t played the position but for a few months, the other is a product of a system and it will be a crap shoot if either becomes a quality player on the next level. But even so, neither one of those guys makes it to #18.

Trotter has been in the most underutilized pool of defensive talent in the entire league for the past two years. We need run support and pass rush, Trotter gives us both of those things if we use him right. He also would be pretty affordable.

On the other hand, I am truly mystified by all the Manning hate on this board.

But Vilma and Gamble will not be there at the 18th pick and I don\'t think the Saints should trade up to get them... when good players will be there at 18 and in the second round... Only player I\'d trade up to get is ELI If the Chargers don\'t pick him are trade down... I\'d say we better do something to get him. I hate to see him in Oakland.

I don\'t think that there is Manning hate on the board. I just think (speaking for me), that we are tired about always hearing about trading up for Manning. Realisticly, that WON\'T happen. Even if he doesn\'t go first, he will not get down to 18, and I really don\'t think we have anyone to trade away for to get in the position to reach him, (at least not without trading away the future of this team).
I know that a lot of people don\'t feel that it\'s realistic that we will get Gamble or Vilma at 18 either, but at least that is within this relm of possiblity.

Well, most of us aren\'t getting the fascination of trading for Eli. At least getting Gamble or Vilma or even both is a possibility since there is always a chance a player might fall farther in the draft than expected (see Deuce McAllister). If we were in a position to get him, I\'d be all for it, but we\'re not. We\'d need to be at least top 10 already to trade up that far. Just remember how much it cost us to move up to get Ricky and that was only moving 6 or 7 spots at most. You\'re wanting us to move more than double that many spots.

And no, I don\'t think there are truly any Manning haters here. You have to kind of respect Archie for what he did for the franchise (and what he probably gave up had he gone to a decent team) and Peyton has proven to be a star in this league. The problem is that every time the wind blows we have to read about how that means we should trade up to get Eli when the sane members of this board realize it isn\'t going to happen barring some divine intervention.

My advice would be that every time you get the urge to write on this board about how we need to get Eli you should drop to your knees and pray to God that it will happen instead. At least then you might be increasing the chances in your favor.

I don\'t mean to be the nay-sayer, but our last few high defensive picks haven\'t exactly been out of this world. Both Grant and Sully are good players. Both can develop into very good or great players. Neither is enough of an impact guy to make a huge difference. A rookie at MLB is not something I\'m real big on. Give me Gold. If not Gold, give me Trotter or Barrow and draft someone to be an influence 3 years from now. The Saints need to make a move NOW. Not three to five years from now. I\'m tired of hearing about all this young talent and potential. At some point the potential has to translate into results.

Have you ever even seen Vilma play? That guy can and will step in from day one and be a major force. Not many players can do it, but I believe he will. Taking a corner in round one is the mistake. That would be one that would have to develop. Not to mention the first round corners this year aren\'t much more talented than the second round guys. There are no stand-out corners this year. We need to go LB, and that LB needs to be Vilma.
I know I have said this over and over, and it\'s probably about as annoying as the Eli freak, but it\'s the truth.

And why do people keep mentioning Gold and acting like he will fix out MLB problems? The guy is a OLB. He would be a great signing, but we still need a MLB.

And coming from the opposite side of the field, I\'ve never understood your Manning pipe dream. Why would we trade 2 of our top impact players for a guy who won\'t even be able to contribute for two seasons?

I think some people just can\'t get over the name \"Manning\". I mean yeah, he\'s gonna turn out to be a pretty good QB, I\'m confident in that. But why sacrifice the team for him? I mean honestly, how good were we the last time a Manning was the QB of the Saints? And thats the same place the Colts will be in a couple seasons, when Petons massive salary starts to inihibit the teams ability to compete.

what people fail to realize is its just not the money thing Peyton got... its the power. If he doesn\'t like the way the team is headed and players coming in he doesn\'t have to do anything but keep collecting his check. If he does... then he can re-negociate and help bring those players to the colts.

the only way we would be able to trade up for eli is if we traded our first and 2 seconds and most likely our first next year.... there is no way in hell that the chargers are gonna want to drop from first in the draft a full 17 spots, and the thought of adding brooks to that deal will not happen, we would take a super cap hit b/c of brooks\' signing bonus, so if u want eli, u better cut his picture out of the news paper or find his trading card b/c he aint coming to the saints to be a qb

With Boston gone, the Chargers can\'t afford to take Eli. They need a receiver or 2 in the worst way. Nobody wants to trade up at the price the Chargers will be asking.

Now we\'re talking the Raiders or the Cardinals, just 16 or 15 spots respectively.

This is the Ricky WIlliams trade all over again. History does repeat itself I guess. You\'ll have to trade Brooks and package all the picks this year and perhaps a one or two next year and start Manning this year. Manning will sale tickets and give us an 8-8 season again as a learning year. We still will be hurting at MLB and CB.

I am sick of all of this trading up talk. I think Eli is going to be a great player, but there is no way we(especially Haslett) can afford to be competitive by trading up. If they don\'t make the playoffs this year Haslett will be out of a job. Right now we are only a MLB & CB away from being a playoff team. There is no way the Saints trade up for Eli.

Let me see if I have this straight.
1. We have made no meaningful moves for a CB or a LB in free agency.
2. If we do have new CB or LB\'s they will pretty much have to be drafted (barring a surprise June 1 cut, in which case, we\'d still have to actually make a move on a released player)
3. We keep Brooks who gets us to 8-8.
4. We could trade and get Eli, who gets us to 8-8.

So why not deal Brooks and live with Eli\'s 8-8 next year and then have 10-6 or better with Eli the year after?

This I understand.
What I don\'t understand is why retain Brooks when he doesn\'t WIN NOW? Why keep Brooks when he won\'t WIN LATER either?

Why does it not make sense to draft ELI when he is at least going to WIN LATER?

This \"BrooksMustGo\" attitude is pathetic. Get over the idea that he may/should be traded. If you firmly believe HE is the reason we haven\'t made the playoffs then YOU are crazy. We\'ve had no defense whatsoever. Let\'s fix the other side of the ball (i.e. stop the run and create turnovers), catch the ball on a more frequent basis (they are NFL receivers, right?), stop \"run, run, pass\" play calling, and PLEASE go down-field more often. If, after all of these are fixed, we still don\'t win, then we can talk about a QB change.
Until then, GET OVER IT!!!!!

Again, watch out for that ulcer man.
And I guess the QB has no culpabilit, at all, ever, for poor performance?
Brooks problems are intangibles and suspect mental processes. He kills the team at key moments and then giggles about it on the sidelines.
My thought in trading him is that his numbers aren\'t bad. They are probably, in fact, good enough to entice some other team to give us a high draft pick so they can develop his endless \"potential\".

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/foo..._PER_GAME.html
Last season we finished 18th in total defense. This hardly qualifies as no defense at all, I guess you were using hyperbole.
We finished 27th in run defense. This is bad and not a Brooks deal, but there was still a playoff team below us.
We finished 8th in pass defense. This is actually pretty good. Several playoff teams didn\'t do as well as we did against the pass.
So why is it that we cut any player that is good against the run to play coverage? I agree, this is a front office issue, but Brooks does not elevate his play. You never hear phrases like, \"Brooks makes players around him better\" or \"Brooks simply refused to lose.\"
It does seem that if one unit is supposed to be stronger, then it has to be the defense. Maybe it should (defense winning championships and all), but if so, why is the offense supposedly so talented? Offense is where the money is, offense is where the emphasis is.

Quote:

This is a straw man, the difference between Brooks passing yardage over the past 2 seasons is less than 30 yards. Horn did drop a pretty sure TD against Tampa, but then didn\'t Brooks fumbles have something to do with that loss too?

Quote:

stop \"run, run, pass\" play calling, and PLEASE go down-field more often.
Maybe, maybe not. Going down field will require Brooks to hang in the pocket to deliver the football. Brooks for his entire career backs out of his protection or fails to notice the player lining up opposite him without anyone to pick up the block. I\'m not sure that we can go downfield regularly until Brooks learns to read a defense or stands in the pocket. I\'m not a big fan of all the playcalling either, but Brooks does pose some unique limitations. In the same way that you don\'t ask Peyton Manning to improvise a QB keeper to go 10+ yards, you don\'t ask Brooks to be patient or to stand in the pocket.

...did you see Manning show us how exposed we were to the past this past year? Besides if you can beat a team by running the ball... guess what teams will do \"run\". until you can stop the run... they will run it down our throats. Which means less passes so our pass defense goes up. Stop the run and watching them go all out and air assualt on us.
