Play should have been dead once the whistle blew. Saints ball and Detroit getting screwed. The officials did them a favor by giving them possession. They couldn't capitalize on our mistakes and who came back and stomped them. Whether or not Schwartz feel like they beat themselves or not, boo hoo... enjoy the rest of your off season sulking in your own misery.

After a very tough, maybe not totally accurately called game, a very, very, very small coach marched up to the officials and said, "I'm not happy!"
The White Hat looked down at him and asked, "Oh yeah, then which one are you?"

The only difference I see would have been a possible 35 to 52 score. Even in an ideal Detroit world, there's no way they would have won. They played hard, much better than the first game. Congrats to them, it's great to see them back in the playoffs. It'll be good for Schwartz to have a year to grow up a bit.

I actually thought that the refs did a better job this time around than week 13 and there were very few questionable calls made in this game.

The Brees fumble has already been beaten to death - - but to reiterate, as the call was originally made it should've been Saints' ball. Now, that wouldn't have been the right call, and the refs did do what they could to correct it by giving the ball to the Lions. But to say that it would've been a TD return is going out on a limb in a big way.

As for Schwartz's comments about the refs having a big impact on the outcome... well that is clear, because if there were no refs it would be total chaos!

But it seems to me that blaming the refs is something that is very popular among the fanbase of the Lions, because even before this game there were threads on their fan sites claiming that the Lions could only win the game if they got a certain officiating crew and in the case of certain crews - they wouldn't have a chance, because there was supposed to be some conspiracy against the Lions.

The Saints were the better team and, furthermore, the Lions suck and they are an immature team - from the players to the HC - that will never become better than what they were this season.... hope they can find some joy in those 1950's championships because they won't be getting any newer ones [purple glasses inserted]

Correct.
And we have already seen what the likes of Brees will do on that Vikings Brian De La Puente poor communication bad snap fumble when Brees brought that runner down with a tackle worthy of a rugby final.

But I think he did because he read the play as an incomplete pass (and not a fumble).

That was the offsetting penalties one? I thought both calls were weak.

Problem with this call is the ball has to be inside the pylon. The point of the ball hit the pylon and therefore never crossed the plane inbounds. Last time I looked the pylon is on the ob edge not in the field of play.

Yeah, but on the NBC "super close-up" or whatever they call it they showed the ball pushing the pylon inward, which would in effect mean that the ball crossed the goal line.

Although, when I watched that play frame by frame on my own from the backside perspective - I thought that the left knee was in fact down before the ball touched the pylon, 2 frames before where the NBC froze the play showing the pylon going inward. But the call was called "confirmed," which means that even if they would've called it 4th down on the field, they would've reversed it after a Lions' challenge.
