Harbaugh says he didn't provoke Saints before preseason game

SANTA CLARA – Building close, congenial relationships with other NFL coaches isn't exactly Jim Harbaugh's forté. Just ask Lions coach Jim Schwartz. Or Seahawks coach Pete Carroll.

But Harbaugh on Monday insisted he did nothing wrong before the Aug. 12 exhibition opener in New Orleans to anger the Saints into blitzing the 49ers as if an NFC Championship Game berth was on the line.

Bucking typical preseason protocol, New Orleans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams regularly sent six or seven pass rushers during the game, sacking the 49ers' quarterbacks six times and leveling starter Alex Smith several times in the first quarter.

The scuttlebutt out of New Orleans afterward was that Harbaugh offended Saints coach Sean Payton by not telephoning Payton so the two head coaches could discuss the parameters of the upcoming game.

"Sean Payton sort of expected Harbaugh to call him throughout the week and kind of figure out a gentleman's agreement as to how the game would be played," Saints radio play-by-play man Jim Henderson said after the game.

"When that didn't occur, Sean just said to Gregg, 'Let the dogs out.' And they did."

Harbaugh on Monday said he was unaware of a gentlemen's agreement among coaches in the preseason and even asked around during the summer to see if he was following the proper procedure.

I wonder if their not going to get to see the same thing in this game, I hope so we'll get to see if they can handle it. Payton and Williams just might let the dogs out in this one! Bet ya' Alex Smith remembers that game...Go get'em Gregg, let them out.

Three threads on a non-story. Harbaugh isn't even quoted directly in any article.

After we beat them, Payton needs to head but Harbaughs a** instead of shaking his hand.

Much to do about nothing. Doesn't matter.

Payton said today in press conference he knows both the Harbaugh brothers personally. This really is much to do about nothing.

Pre-season doesn't mean squat. Both teams play head to head in 4 days....

Yeah I don't think the preseason matters for either team. It's just media hype story crap. I would have expected your team to be much further ahead at that time. After a long lockout, like a few weeks to prepare, no offseason, a young and up coming team. Vs. you guys who have had the same system, players, play calling and coaching for years. A lockout didn't matter to you. But it did to us.

Anyway it's a full season in now so everybody is more seasoned now. It will be a true test now for both teams.

I love when they reference those Navy phrases in their articles :), it makes me feel all warm & fuzzy . . . lol.

- "Scuttlebutt" in slang usage means rumor or gossip, deriving from the nautical term for the cask used to serve water (or, later, a water fountain).[1][2]

- The term corresponds to the colloquial concept of a water cooler in an office setting, which at times becomes the focus of congregation and casual discussion. Water for immediate consumption on a sailing ship was conventionally stored in a scuttled butt: A butt (cask) which had been scuttled by making a hole in it so the water could be withdrawn. Since sailors exchanged gossip when they gathered at the scuttlebutt for a drink of water, scuttlebutt became Navy slang for gossip or rumours.[2]

So true, I like Harbaugh's attitude, it's what a young team needs. It will be a good game and a hard fought win........for us.

Blah, I can't believe I just said that.

If you're gonna make a comment, read the article, not just the thread title.

So where did it say that Harbaugh was complaining? Pretty much everything he said all week is that it's a non-issue, and it was to be expected.

Halo 01-11-2012 06:14 PM

I think we can finally put this to rest.
Jim Harbaugh said NOTHING.
Sean Payton said NOTHING.

It's all make-believe B.S. It's a report without any quotes whatsoever from either coach or team.

It's a "report" from a "reporter" in the media to stir the pot. You see... if that "report" makes headlines, the "reporter" gets props for breaking a story whether it's a LIE or not. Stop being herded like sheep people!

Video quality isn't great but this was on the news at 5:30pm yesterday:

joker-saint 01-12-2012 12:47 AM

LOL......I cant believe the mouth on this guy. This video has nothing to do with this thread by the way, i just wanted to show the class some of the 49ers fans have. I have no doubts that this will be a hard fought game, but I dont think its going to be as hard on the Saints offense as it is on their defense. Click this video, but beware he is pretty damn offensive towrad us as a team. Gotta admire his team spirit though ;-)

We WILL beat the Katrinas! - YouTube

He seems to understand his team fairly well.....but then again so does Sean Payton by now. He listed a lot of strengths of ours that just wouldn't happen because of this or that.
In all that time running his mouth he never once mentioned PT23. Foolish boy. Let's see how many of his posse want to see another video after they go down Saturday.
Now that was truly trash talking......I hope their players have that same mentality. It makes victory so much more fun.:bng:
