49ers notes: Saints aim to give Brees a clear ciew of receivers

SANTA CLARA – One of the ways the 49ers will try to slow Drew Brees and the high- powered Saints offense: block the quarterback's view.

At 6 feet, Brees is one of the shortest quarterbacks in the league. He has overcome his low profile, however, with great awareness of where everyone is on the field and, according to 49ers defensive end Justin Smith, where the open gaps are along the line of scrimmage.

"He's just a really smart guy the way he attacks the pass rush," Smith said Wednesday. "He knows where those B-gap windows are going to be and he baits the outside rushers by dropping back, and then he steps up and slides to where he needs to be for his open receivers."

roflmao. that is all they got?

let us know how that works out, FortyWhiners.

TheOak 01-12-2012 09:05 AM

The simple fact that San Francisco is looking at alternative methods to stop our offense proves they they are scared and their standard game plans are inadequate.

dam1953 01-12-2012 09:30 AM

It's kind of funny that Brees has been putting up record book numbers since teaming up with Payton. I don't think he has shrunk since then.

Our ground game will force the SF D-line to respect the run. A QB doesn't need to be 6'6" to run play action. The Saint's have been killing opponents deep on these plays.

AlaskaSaints 01-12-2012 09:55 AM

Next strategy:

" We really think it will be crucial to block the Saints' punts. We've been working hard on getting an open lane to the spot of release, but we're having problems; there's just not a lot of tape. BUT, we're working on it! "

Remember the name Justin Smith. You're going to see/hear a lot about him during the game.

Smith and Smith and Smith are going to wreck you guys. Also expect to see Smith on special teams to add a little support.

AlaskaSaints 01-12-2012 10:00 AM

Jared Allen and a boy named Suh thought the same.

YOU, my friend, are going to see a lot of Drew Brees during this game.

Alaska

TheOak 01-12-2012 10:05 AM

This is what I want to see.

I want to see SF defensive linemen stand up and take Chris Ivory to the gut!
Stand up straight and try and put a hand on DL Sproles.
Stand up straight and try to stop PT!

The moral of the story is that our run game is probably the biggest sleeper in the game...

Its not a sporty 550 HP Mustang Shelby GT 500.

It is a 4 door 556 HP Cadillac CTS-V sedan.

You pull up against it, look at the 4 doors and the Cadillac symbol and a little old lady comes to mind... Then the light turns green and 3.9 seconds later it is hitting 60 while you try and play catch up.

CCulliver29 01-12-2012 10:14 AM

Further proof that the fans are delusional, actually believing they can run against the 49er's with Patrick Willis back and rested.

Btw, the lineman don't have to do much in the run game. Patrick Willis can shut down the run by him self.

AlaskaSaints 01-12-2012 10:25 AM

How long since he's played tackle football?

How old are you, Culliver? You profess like a 16-year-old who just discovered "erect".

That's what happens when you get to watch Patrick Willis at work every week. Yall gonna be mad jelly when you realize it.

Tell me after the game that Pwilly didn't make you hard, even just a little bit, and I'll call you a liar.

No disrespect, but Suh is just a little better , and we handled him nicely.

Rickh 01-12-2012 02:15 PM

doesn't anyone think that people have been tryin to do this to Drew Brees since 2006?

Ridiculous...

That's stupid. Otherwise, why don't the Whiners would play only Willis at linebacker and add players to a pedestrian secondary? The famed 4-1 defense.;)

I will make it easy on the forty-whiners...

Some people are a little homeristic about the run game but really - it has been already proven that the 49ers can be beaten with just simple 50-60-70-80 or 110 yard type rushing numbers. And we have four healthy backs to do it, we will spread it around so they stay fresh late in the game when the defense is tired, and although no one in Niner nation will admit it, we are 6th in rushing to their 8th, had more rushing TD's, and we have a 4.9 rushing average to their 4.1, that's nearly a whole yard difference. Very helpful in a tight game. And fewer fumbles on the year. Sproles recently set an all-time NFL single-season record for all purpose-yards, which of course includes short passes and kick returns as well as runs, but the reality is that a healthy chunk of his yardage was done on the ground from a conventional RB position. He is speedy and elusive and makes guys miss, he can give big guys some problems in tackling him or even keeping track of where he is on the field. And GRASS does not seem to slow him down much, he played well in San Diego and ran wild for us in games on grass turf including Carolina and Tennessee this year.

Is it gametime yet?

It cannot get here fast enough.

It's all talk till the game starts.
Has anyone noticed how quiet the Saints have been? They have only been handing out compliments to the 9ers. They have been quietly focusing on the task at hand. They are talented, healthy and confident. One day at a time and one game at a time. This is their time to shine & silence the BIG MOUTH pundits.

JUST WIN BABY!!

Other than GW, you never hear anyone in the Saints organization say a peep about any team before a game, other than the standard compliments.

Now that I think about it, the barbs are usually directed at the media and the stupidity they spew: so much for being rusty, it doesn't matter if we finessesely kick their assess... very rare it is directed at a player or team, like the Whistle Monster bit, but even that is after a game.

Are you saying he plays better than: Clay Matthews, AJ, Hawk, Lance Brigs, Brian Urlacher, Umenyiora, Tuck, Suh, Vanden Bosch, Allen, and Winfield? No.....I dont think Smith and Willis are going to cause that much trouble for Brees. Im looking forward to seein Alex Smith try to burn our defense though. This will be a really good test of our defensive front four.

Yes .... given the tides, the fog, morning dew, the grass, fact that drugs are used in the "dump" that is New Orleans, Drew's height, as well as that the moon will be up Uranus ..... the Saints are doomed.

Somehow, you get the idea that 49er fans have taken up a religious practice more associated with Louisiana: voodoo.

FireVenturi 01-14-2012 08:02 AM

While atlantas run D isn't as stout as the whiners it was top eight in the league....at least until we got a hold of them.
