How much should Drew Brees make?

With the season over for the Saints, the hot topic in New Orleans suddenly has become the contract situation of quarterback Drew Brees.

His contract expired the moment the Saints lost to San Francisco on Saturday. Technically, he can become a free agent in March. But it’s pretty much a certainty the Saints will re-sign him. If Brees somehow was to leave the Saints, it would be one of the biggest crimes in sports history.

Besides, I don’t think Brees wants to leave New Orleans and the Saints don’t want to lose him. So why wasn’t a deal worked out long ago? Well, there were ongoing talks throughout much of the season, but Brees tabled them later in the year because he didn’t want distractions.

On one level, a new deal for Brees will be very complicated because it’s going to involve a lot of money and have major implications on the team’s salary-cap status for the duration of the contract. On another level, it’s not all that complicated.

Its a stupid question right?

'As much as he wants to make'!

SapperSaint 01-19-2012 08:25 AM

They don't need to low ball him. However, they don't need to get ridiculous either.

I say just ask him what he wants. I feel sure he wont throw out a number that is crazy. I feel that he tabeled the talks because both sides are trying to figure out what "won't break the bank". I think Drew really wants what it best not only for himself, but for the Saints as well. JMO.

Sign a long term deal such as 7 years for 100 million with 8 million signing bonus and stretch the money out to where the bulk of it is payed in the last couple years of his contract so that we have enough money to sign other players for superbowl run for the next 3 years or so.

Danno 01-19-2012 08:39 AM

Since league minimum on average is about 500,000 and you need 53 players, and the cap will be approximately 120 million, my math says 52 players at league minimum leaves 94 million per year for Drew.

Get on it Loomis.

Mardigras9 01-19-2012 08:40 AM

Equal or more than the best paid QB in the league, since that's what he is.

Euphoria 01-19-2012 08:47 AM

He should already have the keys to the dome.

He isn't stupid... they need to get a contract done but you also have to shore up that D to make another run.

It comes down to what is more important to Drew. Lets face it he has all the money he needs already its just a matter of holding the Saints to winning. Get me me a D and I'll sign MF'ers.

His "slot" should fall in somewhere just behind Brady, Manning, but right with Aaron Rodgers...the MVP sure would help his cause; but, the same "Northern" Media-bias we hate will keep that from happening...

buckblaster1 01-19-2012 10:50 AM

yeap, gonna be hard for drew to get mvp with the ones who vote for it . he'll have to deal with @#$%@# ;'s like the saint hating chris collingsworth. if i hear that guy say aaron rodgers one more time i'll puke. i think they must be sleeping togeather. yeah i think we'll give drew enough to keep him here and still keep some key free agents

Beastmode 01-19-2012 11:21 AM

He's not going anywhere. He wants to get paid but also he wants to win. It took several years to develop that chemistry with Payton and the offense. Payton has already stated his goals are long term to have a winning organization, not 2-3 years. You have to have a Brady or Manning caliber QB to make that a reality and those are extremely hard to come by in the NFL. Everybody knows without Brady or without Brees those teams will fall apart as we've seen this season with the Colts. Nobody wants that for the Saints. i think he will likely get slightly less than Brady with that being said.

Now that was a mental picture I surely didn't need.

Chris Collingswoth has been a Saints hater for ages, so I totally agree.
Look, let's face it, Aaron Rogers got the MVP. I saw informal polls of media people and Rogers won the hearts of the media.

Drew is a smart guy, he know's too big of a contract is going to hinder the team from signing the players they need on defense.

Drew is a man of character and class. he won't be cheap, but I don't think it will be anything too crazy.

UK_WhoDat 01-19-2012 12:15 PM

Just ask him. Brees knows he ought to paid what he is worth but he also know his production is dependent on a team. He takes the whole kitty and there is no team to help him further.

biloxi-indian 01-19-2012 12:21 PM

IMHO; Brees should be in the $18-20mm per year. I will leave it to the creative accounting of the FO as to how it impacts the salary cap.

Nicks will command more than Evans 7-year $56mm with $19mm guaranteed.

Colston, will certainly command more than Moore's 5-year $21.5mm with $7mm guaranteed.

As we all suspect, with a new NFL TV deal, salary caps will increase in out years.

Drew had the better year. Drew is clearly the most valuable player. The MVP award, just like damn near all the others, is a joke.

SmashMouth 01-19-2012 01:15 PM

Maybe they can work a back end deal that won't hurt the cap so much, one that pays him a bunch when he retires as a Saint!

RailBoss 01-19-2012 07:14 PM

I like that Euphoria that's the best freaking answer! There is no dollar amount we civilians can even imagine.

QBREES9 01-19-2012 09:33 PM

Blank check let him fill it in.

gandhi1007 01-19-2012 10:02 PM

I honestly believe that the kind of man Drew Brees is......they could discuss the cap, tell him who they could keep, what it would cost, & give him the options. Brees would work with management to keep who he felt he needed to win & base his pay on that. That's just the kind of guy he is. Just don't insult the man with some kind of low ball number! ;-)

Danno 01-19-2012 10:22 PM

I have no worries about Loomis and Brees wanting to make a fair deal.

I am worried about Drew's agent causing problems.

B_Dub_Saint 01-19-2012 10:31 PM
