Jeff Duncan

The special teams should be vastly improved in 2004. The return of S Mel Mitchell from a knee injury should boost the coverage units, and the addition of RB Aaron Stecker should help the return game. Don't be surprised if Stecker beats out Michael Lewis for the kick-return job.

Re-signing Spencer Folau was important because he is one of the NFL's most versatile offensive linemen. Folau can play guard or tackle, and there is little drop-off when he replaces a starter. He is insurance in case RT Victor Riley fails to report to camp in good shape.

Recently signed FB Sam Gash, 35, has enough left in the tank to contribute. He isn't a threat to run but is a decent receiver and a solid blocker. With his experience, Gash should be a plus in the team's sophisticated protection schemes.

DEFENSIVE ADJUSTMENTS

The team wants to take better advantage of Cie Grant's range and instincts, so he will line up a yard or two deeper than most middle linebackers. The Ravens line up Ray Lewis in a similar way. The alignment should improve pursuit angles and allow fewer linemen to reach Grant (6-0, 230). The team might move James Allen into a platoon with Sedrick Hodge at strongside linebacker. If the more physical Allen meets the challenge, he'll play on running downs and yield to the speedy Hodge in passing situations. The addition of DT Brian Young should move Johnathan Sullivan from a 3 technique tackle to the nose. Young (6-2, 290) is too small to play on the nose.
