Philadelphia Made Steve Spagnuolo An Offer He Refused

1 Attachment(s)
The rumor mill placed Steve Spagnuolo back with the Philadelphia Eagles long before the St. Louis Rams canned him as their head coach. Weeks went by and the rumors continued, even as he was interviewing in Indianapolis and New Orleans. He never did end up in Philly again, but it's not because a lack of effort from Andy Reid and the Eagles.

Reid said in a Tuesday press conference that he offered Spagnuolo a job. Jeff McLane at the Philadelphia Inquirer has the details. What exactly that position was, Reid never said. Whatever the job was, Spagnuolo would have been working with Juan Castillo, the incumbent Eagles defensive coordinator. Apparently that was a deal breaker for Spagnuolo, understandably so.

Glad he came here!! Now do your job, fix our D....

Yeah ... dang it!

And make sure the DL doesn't eat too much Fried Chicken either!

I'm glad we got him, but I can't imagine turning down a chance to coach that kind of talent. Babin, Jenkins, Cole, Samuel, Asomugha, and DRC. We can't compete with that level of talent on defense.

It was my avatars that tempted him into it.

So he turned down a d full of talent playing like individuals for a D that plays like a JV team, wow Drew has more pull then we realize sometimes

Come to think of it ... he did turn down the "dream team"!

He knows where the best chance to get a ring is. It's here.
Get a ring, and it's like Tony Dungy said, "Mo money, Mo money!"

True, but I think it's "FOR THE GLORY" or in internet terms FTW (FOR THE WIN).

I think the Saints are positioned with key players to make a run at the SB next year. If Spags turns this defense around, his stock rises and he get's props for the work.

Much like Gregg Williams... before he arrived our defense was weak. Gregg's problem is he couldn't keep that level of play up consistently for the 2 consecutive years.

When you go to "the Dream Team" with a team of defenders who are stacked with talent, if that defense improves, critics will say Spags was handed talent on a silver platter and NOT attribute the defensive success to him.

We'll see. So excited about the upcoming season.

You mean "Shady" Grady Jackson syndrome? (see #91 below...)

I hope he can work on a tight budget, it's going to be rough for him with the players we have on defense..
Many of them seem to have gotten lazy right after the big pay day.

I think he has a pretty good base to work with, much better than most new coaches inherit.

I don't think we got lazy, I think we just became predictable. From what I've read about Spagnuolo, his defenses are anything but predictable.

There's a new Sherrif in town and these boys are gonna want to prove themselves all over again. It should be exciting.

Actually I read somewhere that the job they offered him at PHI was to be the secondary coach while Castillo would still return as the DC - maybe Reid thought that he would give Juan another chance and if he tanked, they could just promote Spags to take his place mid-season.

I'm not saying that this was the reason alone why he chose NO, but It's not really a head-scratcher if you compare taking a job as the DC or as the secondary coach.
