Ravens retain interest in Northcutt

But sources say team unwilling to deal high pick for Browns wide receiver

While the Ravens remain high on Cleveland Browns receiver Dennis Northcutt, a trade offer is not necessarily imminent, team sources said yesterday.
Northcutt was one of the players the Ravens were going to target heading into free agency. But Northcutt's agent missed a deadline to file papers with the league that would have voided the remaining years of Northcutt's contract.

With Northcutt still the property of the Browns, Cleveland has given him permission to seek trade opportunities. Team sources said the Ravens are looking at Northcutt, but are not willing to part with a high draft choice to obtain him. The Ravens also might be open to a player-for-player deal.

The Browns, though, are unlikely to trade Northcutt within the division and have not ruled out the possibility of having him return. Northcutt led the Browns with 62 receptions for 729 yards last season, his first as a full-time starter, with two touchdowns.

The Ravens also would want Northcutt, 26, to return punts.

Ravens coach Brian Billick did not want to speak directly of Northcutt, who averaged 8.2 yards on 36 punt returns, but did say: "We're not done in terms of players because there are players getting pushed out in the market daily, for a number of reasons. You can anticipate some of it and some of it you can't. But I would think, with the exception of the receiver position, I don't know if we're going to be active in much else until after the draft."

Northcutt was originally a second-round pick in the 2000 draft out of Arizona.

I\'d give up a second for Northcutt. 4-WR set with Horn/Stallworth/Crowell/Northcutt and Deuce in the back field... I don\'t know if anyone has enought CB\'s to cover us and if so... quick pitch to deuce and let him run over them.

2nd rounder? Hell no, if we had a great need at WR like the Ravens do, then maybe, but I would rather keep that pick.

Northcutt is pretty darn good. It is also highly probable that one of our WRs will get injured - one of them is Stallworth, Crowell is coming off injury, and Horn is getting old. Northcutt could also return punts - we will all remember exactly how impressive Lewis was last season...

I agree with BnB that a 2nd rounder is too high, but what about a 3rd rounder? How about a 4th and one of our \"prospects\" at the position like Gardner or D.Lewis, or heck what about the Beer Man (if he has any value left)?

I\'m generally in favor of knowing what you are going to get; thus, I\'m a bit skeptical about banking on the draft (which as near as I can figure is a craps shoot). I\'m sure someone can tell us how many valuable players our boys have got in the 3rd round. I\'m willing to bet the list isn\'t actually all that impressive.

I\'m never sure why we aren\'t a bit more brazen during the FA period. That is the best way to know what you are getting (even if it costs a little bit more). As with last year, I am disappointed with the Saints offseason - draft picks are fine, but I don\'t see why people think they are SO valuable (especially after the 2nd round). If anyone has any thoughts, I\'d love to hear them.

Cheers.

Simply put - no. I don\'t even think I would give up a 3rd rounder for the guy. He is nothing more than a #3 WR and if we wanted another one of those, we could draft one.

Saints need two kinds of receivers .

1. 6\'3\" or taller for those jump ball deep route passes Brooks throws .
2. 5\'8\" or smaller for those hook route knee cap passes Brooks throws .

No way we should give up a draft pick for him.

Dude- Terrell Owens was had for a 5th rounder and Brandon Whiting. The Ravens thought they were going to land him for a 2nd rounder. You think I\'d give up a 2nd rounder for Northcutt, you\'re the one that shouldn\'t even be allowed to watch pro football, much less coach it.
