Will Saints Draw Opening Game @ NY Giants?

Saints could land another opening game - NFC South Blog - ESPN

It looks like there’s at least a chance the New Orleans Saints could be playing in the season’s first game for the third straight year.

As the defending champion Super Bowl champion, the New York Giants will host the Thursday night opener at MetLife Stadium. That game will be played Sept. 6.

I’m just looking at the eight teams the Giants are scheduled to host in 2012 and the Saints look like one of the three leading candidates, along with Green Bay and Pittsburgh. The league doesn’t usually schedule division opponents in the opener.

You also can probably scratch the Buccaneers and Browns from the list since they’re not marquee teams. Green Bay and Pittsburgh each have national followings and the Giants and Packers could be paired in a rematch of the playoff game in which New York went into Lambeau Field and defeated the Packers.

But don’t count out the Saints. They also draw strong television ratings and they played the Thursday night opening game at Green Bay in 2011 and hosted it against Minnesota in 2010.

Is that a dig at GB?

W. Kovacs 02-06-2012 12:03 PM

I really hope so. I know it's tough to win that game for the team that's not the defending champs but I want the game in NY to be in warm weather...not December.

I, like the author, am over the inaugural game...let someone else have it, like GB...

Ashley 02-06-2012 12:39 PM

All though I would love to see it. I think it will be GB.

i was looking at the teams we have to play next season . it looks real good for us . i really dont see anyone on there that i think we cant beat. the one game i really like is the 49 ers in the dome , payback time for them

Euphoria 02-06-2012 01:28 PM

makes sense its GB being they won the SB last year... so the 2 previous SB winners going at it.

Also GB being the number one seed going into the play offs.

I don't want to face the champs in the opening game; just something about the banner unveiling equaling a huge momentum hurdle for the away team...

We got SACRIFICED in Green Bay last year, and I'd rather not be sacrificed in New York this year.

I hope the Saints won't play in it, because no matter how good we feel about their chances again next season - the probability of winning the season opener is slim to none.

I hope the Saints start next season in a regular way, Sunday afternoon and with a W.

Sacrificed, we barely lost in Green Bay and last I checked Eli is no Aaron Rodgers. He got on a roll, I remember dominating his team in the dome. Victor Cruz got two touchdowns when the game was no longer in doubt, thats a road game I think we can win, opening night or not!!!!

LivnaLieTimay 02-06-2012 03:21 PM

I plan on going to the game in NY next season so I would love a September game but would prefer for it to not be opening night. I think we could beat them on opening night but I don't want to sit through some lame Super Bowl ceremony knowing we were a better team. I don't think they'll put us on for a 3rd straight year on opening night, I think GB gets it.

papz 02-06-2012 03:26 PM

No issues if it were to happen. Statement game.

Demolish them. Fear the Saints.

Rugby Saint II 02-06-2012 03:26 PM

I would like to get back to Sunday afternoon football. Let the team get together and get back into their zone.

Budsdrinker 02-06-2012 03:46 PM

It's a rematch for GB and Giants just like it was for us and viqueens and also just like it was this past season the current champion vs the previous year's champion. We'll get a Sunday or Monday night game against the Giants.

saintfan 02-06-2012 04:39 PM

Personally I think we'd go up there and beat their brains in...again...

But I got a feeling it'll be GB. I'm not sure the media is done with their Aaron Rodgers suck fest just yet...

UK_WhoDat 02-06-2012 04:43 PM

I think it will be GB.

I would prefer it not to be the Saints really. Would like us to strut our stuff on a Sunday

st thomas 02-06-2012 05:13 PM

i was talking to some buddies the other day about this subject and i remember they/we thought it would be giants- green bay or giants san fran either way i believe we are not in the opener

Nah they still danglin from Rodgers sack. We have played in the opening game the last 2 years. It won't be us.

halloween 65 02-06-2012 05:45 PM

I don't care who we play we will have a full training camp to install our new DC's scheme and we got old reliable {Shaun Payton} at the helm. We very well may be the team to beat this season, last year I drank the kool-aid but deep down knew our D had problems. And it finally bit us.

Jankman8 02-07-2012 06:11 AM

I also hope we get to play Tebowmania later in the season when they are 0-6 or something like that.

MatthewT 02-07-2012 08:45 AM

I am putting my money on the opener being the Giants/Packers. I have to agree that the NFL will probably go with the past two super bowl winners in this case.

Mardigras9 02-07-2012 09:47 AM

Should be G.B.
