Kicker for 2012 season?

Who do you think is gonna be our kicker next year? Hartley back? Kasay another season?

Losing game because of a crappy kickers sucks big time.. just ask Baltimore.

I remember my first season when I followed the Saints in 2007, when they lost some games because of this dude Grammatica or whatever his name was.

dizzle88 02-07-2012 07:11 AM

Hartley will be back I think, kasay getting up there in age and pretty much had the same stats as Hartley % wise

Hartley needs to relax on the short kicks, he's got a huge leg for the 50 yarders but he treats a 20 yard kick like a 59 yard one and tries to smash it, I think that's why he swerves some.

But yeah I remember what you mean, I could count at least 3 games that gramatica could have won us in 2007 and it was a nightmare with him on the team

Jankman8 02-07-2012 07:14 AM

To sum it up Hartley not really reliable - Kasay too old --> solution?

Danno 02-07-2012 08:11 AM

Kasey's main problem is he can't KO anymore. He probably has 2 or 3 years left at 45 yards and in.

Since we have Morstead to KO Kasey is a good fit here.

Jankman8 02-07-2012 08:21 AM

Okay I thought Kasey was more or less done after this season!

MatthewT 02-07-2012 08:28 AM

I think Hartley gets another chance, but the Saints will most definitely keep Kasey on speed dial. If Hartley gets hurt again, the Saints will need to move on. Dude has been injured here and there his entire Saints career.

Beastmode 02-07-2012 08:41 AM

Hartley concerns me, a season ending injury at his age...I think they will bring in some stiff competetion this summer. If he doesn't win that battle with authority he's gone. An injury like that is like a rebuilt transmission, it works but will never truly be the same.

Ashley 02-07-2012 09:24 AM

Damn I forgot about this situation. I like beastmode's idea, bring in some competition. Let them fight it out

jcp026 02-07-2012 09:39 AM

Hartley.

Mardigras9 02-07-2012 09:45 AM

Let them fight for it in training camp. Kasey is the starter heading in.

FinSaint 02-07-2012 09:54 AM

Hartley is under contract = case closed.

I'd like to know the details of that contract. Kasay made this season so easy to watch.

Lest me not forget after a superb 2009 season, in 2010 it was a kick by kick heart attack. Lets not forget the missed extra points.

Possibly could be Hartley as kicker and Kasay as kicking coach. If Hartley misses 1 field goal within 50 or 1 extra point, we can deactivate him and insert Kasay.

FinSaint 02-07-2012 10:54 AM

He signed the new 5-year contract in 2010, which was worth $10.3M with a signing bonus of $3M with an average yearly salary of $2.1M.

His cap hit for next season is $1.7M and with that figure he is cheaper than what at least Carolina were paying Kasay when he was with them, but Kasay's current contract was undisclosed, so I don't know what the Saints were paying him.

IMO, Hartley's injury wasn't season-ending; the Saints didn't have the time or roster space to tie up waiting for him to heal.

The Saints FO probably knew there were only a few FA quality kickers left and pulled the trigger putting Hartley on IR so they could sign Kasay.

lynwood 02-07-2012 11:56 AM

Hartley. %wise no different than Kasey, but has a Stronger leg.

Rugby Saint II 02-07-2012 02:11 PM

Hartley stills owns a Superbowl record for kicks over 40 in a Superbowl.........he might get a long look at camp.
Kasay made this season more viewer friendly with fewer heart attacks. As a veteran he looks the part.

SaintsBro 02-07-2012 02:50 PM

In the beginning of the Payton era there were always problems with the kickers --> looks pointedly in the direction of special teams coach Greg McMahon <--- and Hartley was supposed to be the solution to that, hand-picked to solve the kicking woes once and for all. Actually, even before Payton got here the Saints kickers were a mess. Like him or not, Hartley IS the intended solution to that. I think it's going to be Hartley (with Kasay on speed dial), and my advice is for people to stop stressing out about it -- the guy is numerically a very reliable kicker. People REALLY need to let that one Falcons game go -- put it in the rearview mirror. It's been talked about a million times, there were TONS of people at fault in that game, it should never have even been in overtime in the first place...Ivory fumbled, Drew threw a really dumb INT, Pierre Thomas broke his freaking ankle..it was not just the one kick that lost it.

saintfan 02-07-2012 02:59 PM

It will be Hartley, and do you want to know why? Because he deserves to be here...

AlaskaSaints 02-07-2012 03:46 PM

I mean...

Who misses a season because he hurt himself kicking a field goal??????

Dempsey lost half his foot and showed up next week and kicked a 63 yarder for Christ's sake!!!

At least I think that's how it went...

LOL

I can honestly say I didnt cringe nearly as much this year in FG situations as I did last year in the same situations with Hartley.

That's because the rest of the team didn't put Kasey in a do or die situation each week.

Supertek 02-10-2012 03:07 PM

It's always do or die for a Kicker because missed field goals/PAT's always usually come back to haunt you. Kasay was one cool depenable customer but Hartley has youth on his side and give him credit for what he has done. As stated he has a contract so more than likely he will be back. (Contracts are made to be broken) I agree with some of you here that Hartley scares me. These older more experienced kickers just make it look so much easier. It must take a long time to nail down your technique and to be able to do it over and over again the same way. Maybe we can get gris gris on Hartley to make him mature faster.
