WILL THE SAINTS KEEP COLSTON?

I have no doubt that the New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees will come up with a new agreement over the next few weeks, but I have some real concerns on whether the Saints can resign wide receiver Marques Colston to a long term deal.

If the Saints can do what I believe will happen and negotiate a new deal with Brees before free agency, the Saints will put the franchise tag on the best offensive guard in the NFL in Carl Nicks, and I feel the tough negotiations will be with Colston.

Agent sources tell me that if the Saints can't come to terms on a new deal before free agency starts that the San Francisco 49ers will make a huge money play to acquire him.

The 49ers have one of the elite tight ends in the business in Vernon Davis but have no other real threat downfield, and high-ranking members of the 49er organization feel as though Colston will fit their system due to his size and ability to outmuscle defenders for the football.

That wouldn't be good...but at least we don't have to face them twice a year. Would be worse if it was Falcons.

Without a QB like Brees, Colston won't be nearly as effective.

And Alex Smith has as much in common with Drew Brees as a chameleon does to a crocodile.

I wouldn't want Colston making catches against us in the playoffs...

And watching Jimmy Graham get smothered in coverage would be doubly frustrating...

I personally doubt we sign him. But there has been some talk of Vincent Jackson or Stevie Johnson. Maybe even a high priced defensive player of some kind. Plus the 49ers have to resign their own guys. And it will be expensive. There are some FA's out there of their own who they have to resign. I don't know about Colston. IMO I doubt they do it. But I could see them maybe making a run at him.

That is true I wouldn't wish that either...but there have to be a lot of hurdles for that scenario to play out. But I can make a guarantee with no hurdles, if he goes in our division we face him 2 times a year.

One of the reasons our offense works so well is because of colston

Devery and Meachem don't uncover themselves very well and if Colston left, Jimmy would be doubled every play and Drew would be sat back waiting for devery and meachem to get open every play which would mean Drew would get hit alot more.

Lance moore is great at uncovering himself, but he misses games at a time with hamstring issues, I'd hate to see Colston leave but i'd hate it even more if we didnt address the fact that he left and stuck with the WR's we have.

If he did leave we would need to draft or sign somebody, don't expect adrian arrington or even the drafted person to turn into a colston straight away though

Over 7 years...

Saints with Colston in the line-up = 28 points/game.
Saints without Colston in the line-up = 30 points/game.

Not a huge sample size (he missed 10 games) but I thought it was interesting.
