4 veterans the Saints could release & their replacements
I agree with the first 2.
I agree with 1, 2, & 4. Greer, though??? He's our best CB. We cannot afford to lose him.
I can't see having to replace Greer as a good/easy thing...
There's no way they should replace Greer, he is a really good shut down corner who's numbers should be even better if the Saints had any pass rush.
I'd even go as far as stating that they should try to negotiate a new contract with him which would keep him with the Saints longer than just this next season while maybe bringing down that annual cap hit a bit. Veteran leadership in the secondary is important, we all saw that first hand with Sharper. Henderson's future depends on what the Saints do with Colston and Meachem, and maybe to some extent on how the draft goes, since the Saints traditionally pick the BPA on their turn - they might end up with a cheaper replacement to Henderson. |
Hmmm no mention of releasing some of the dead wight on the line besides Smith? Instead would rather release the best CB on our team...do they get paid to write this stuff?
Not sure I agree with Greer, but I think Ellis should be in the conversation. I like him, but his production isn't equal to his contract.
No way should we talk about Greer leaving this team.
I have no idea what you guys are reading but all I could see was a rundown of how we lost the 49ers game
Yea Greer stays. If any of our corners go it will be Porter. Is there a way we can get something for Vilma, Smith, and Porter in a trade that wouldnt **** with our cap?

Not really, and Porter is an UFA. |
I'm not getting rid of Greer if we do that were starting back over with we needing to get a starting corner. Look until we get a pass rush we can't just throw anybody back there and hope they make a play.
Agree we need to keep Greer and Harper should go via a trade for a lineman or some draft picks. Also Ellis needs to go wish we could get a strong safety for him. Hope the concentrate on defensive players and see if they can pick up one good offensive lineman that could relieve the others.
I agree with these choices. Regarding Greer, it is always curious how a player will work out in a new scheme.

Trading players isn't done every day in the NFL like in some other major sports leagues in North America, so I wouldn't expect the Saints to make any "player for a player" type trade deals if any. Trading Harper is out of question, because he is only entering his second year of the new big contract and, therefore, the cap hit would be unreasonable to warrant a trade. I doubt anyone wants to make a trade for Eliis with his current contract only being for one more year at $6M, if the Saints were able to restructure his contract to be more attractive that would be another situation completely, but then they'd run into the same problem with guaranteed money which would make a trade highly unlikely. I guess trading for Ellis would only be attractive to a team that needs to get to the salary cap floor and with Ellis they'd know he'd be off the books come next season, but I think there are better such options available with a better value in the actual player in comparison to his salary. |
Getting rid of Greer is a terrible idea, Will Smith needs to restructure or be released, same with Ellis and Vilma. I could see Devery being cut if the plan is to bring back Colston and Meachem but this team needs at least one deep threat to keep the middle and short routes open
The only ones that I see going is Smith and Vilma unless they restructure. I could see both doing that too. At this point they both know they are up in years and have made their money. Super Bowl and finishing their career on a winning team should be first on their mind. Cut their pay in half and keep them in a rotation or load it with incentives. Porter will be gone. His play dropped off and Robinson and Patrick would be a nice fill in. All three big boys will be signed.
for the love of god stop gutting the defense and starting over.
Spags clam to fame is winning with what he has. then adding and subtracting in small moves. ie draft and maybe a FA or two. Look to next year for any really major moves if there is any to be made |
......and why do people keep wanting to get rid of Harper??? He's the best tackler on defense & our only Pro Bowler!!!

Greer is one of the best. He's not going anywhere.

2. Because he has about 2 games every year where he gets beat by a TE that runs a 4.3 forty. 3. Because you don't need to know a damn thing about football to post on a football forum. |

I for one am completely happy with Harper as the SS, and like Danno referred to, he is actually pretty good when given a TE coverage duty - well as good as you can expect from such a miss-match on a general level.
Greer and Harper will stay, hopefully Spags sees the talent in Tez and plays him over Shanle
I could care less about the others, but keep Greer. He is by far our best corner.

I still have a lot of hope for Jenkins and I am also completely happy with him as the FS for the Saints. I'm expecting him to bounce back next season helped by a better pass rush from the front guys. |
