That type of "power rock" or whatever its categorized as that Van Halen represents has never struck a chord with me - and as a side note I can further alienate people by saying that AC/DC sucks balls too.

Metallica would be OK if they only did songs from Justice/Puppets era.

Alright. I see where you're at. Van Halen isn't heavy enough for your taste. I'm cool with that. I pretty much dig anything that doesn't suck with the exception of speed metal and violent rap...

But tell me...can you dig this:

I'm pretty open to various musical genres in general, but there are some that don't really light a spark in me.

EV is a great guitarist and he has probably had a huge influence on many musicians who I think are great, so I would never in a million years bash him or his music.

That clip from the show was ok. I mean I wouldn't listen to it again, but I got through it without any ear bleeding. That's just too layed back, but not layed back enough... I know it doesn't make much sense, but that probably best describes my feelings towards that particular musical piece. It just doesn't raise any feelings one way or the other in me.

And I'm not just into heavier music... I listen to a lot of electronic, drum 'n bass, rock, indie, punk rock, and classical music, for example.

Basically, anything that is dark and depressing hits home with my Finnish personality, which is why I guess I love me some Johnny Cash.

I'd like to see a band that can play it all, spanning the history of R&R...

From Elvis to Zepplin to Van Halen to REM to Nirvana to whatever crap you P****Y's listen to post grunge era...

I can dig it. But that's not speed metal. Matter of fact tons of Metallica fans got hissed off because they said Metallica softened up to please a broader audience and make more money.

I like Metallica - most of their stuff. It's not hacked. But there is no comparison of Metallica and Van Halen. Van Halen was classified as "hard rock" early on, but I don't think that's accurate. Van Halen is its own thing, in much the same way that Metallica is its own thing, and that they are each their own thing is precisely why I like them as much as I do.

Van Halen strikes a note with me. There aren't many bands that I really attach myself to like I have Van Halen. Let's see....hmmm...The Eagles...Ummm...Paul Simon...uhmmm...Led Zeppelin...uhhhh...Rush...maybe U2. I also really liked Tears for Fears and The Outfield and A-Ha and it took me a long time to really 'get' the Beatles, but I get it now. I dig Nirvana, but it wasn't until Cobain died that I got into them really. I'm sure there are others but not many.

In the end, I like lots of stuff and I can at least appreciate the stuff I don't like so long as it's got something artistic going for it and so long as the people performing it aren't completely devoid of talent.

Still, Van Halen is the ideal choice for a Super Bowl half time show. Frankly I'm surprised that they haven't been invited already. Maybe the NFL was just being smart and waiting for The brothers and David to make up.

I agree that VH would probably be a good choice for the venue and its target audience, but I'd still prefer a more NOLA approach like was already suggested in this thread.

Your listing of bands doesn't really call out to me, I listened to the Eagles when I was a lot younger around 10-12 and didn't even understand what the songs were about. Nirvana maybe comes the closest, but I never really got on their wagon before or after Mr. Cobain's demise. They have few song I like, but only one I really like:

Ok, I'm thinking something a little more...well...tame, I guess. Because I'm thinking a good entertaining country artist. We need to bring a little class back to the halftime show. Maybe Toby Keith. Or if you still want the old rock and roll guys, maybe Huey Lewis. But if you put a heavy metal band on at halftime, you'll have people jumping out of windows before the start of the second half.
