Williams to blame???

I'm just curious, am I the only one that sees, and knows we have some good talent on the defensive side of the ball? I mean, how many int's were just dropped this past season? A bunch! You put another ball hawk like Sharper back there, and I think we are having sb parades right now... Is there major room for improvement, yes, I am not saying there isn't... But maybe, like a certain linebacker mentioned, the system was figured out, and made it vulnerable... I am looking forward to seeing what Spags, can do with the talent we've got over there...

I agree that we do have some really good players on the D, I think also that there are a few that need upgraded to get to where we need to be, I think GW ran the D in circles at times, I also believe Spags. system will bring consistancy to our D, I wish we had a defense that teams feared when we took the field but I will settle for good consistant play and sound tackling over what we had any day of the week. We are just a few good, sound players from being really, really good on D maybe good enough to win a few games if need be.

No you're not the only one. I have been thinking this for some time. I just think GW was too stubborn to make adjustments based on the players he had. As a result the rest of the league knew what was coming and played accordingly. Yea there are some who need to go but overall I think we have some good talent on the D side of the ball. I'm with you Halloween, I would take some consistent play as well. We don't have to be dominant on the D side just consistent.

Absolutely. GW depended on a Superman that we didn't have. A bunch of Clark Kents will do great in a well constructed defensive scheme. I still have nightmares of Alex Smith shuffling 28 yards for that touchdown with folks in the stands being closer to him than any of our boys. That was a classic example of a baaaad defensive scheme. I really think a DC with a different outlook on playing D won't be too disappointed with what he has to work with.

Exactly, one or two key guys makes a huge difference on the defense. Look at Green Bay, it's all Charles Woodson and Clay Matthews with the rest of the roster in support. You can get by with the 'Clark Kents', but you need a real playmaker or two to rise above the crowd.

Yes but I think yall are missing one key ingredient in all this.

You can have all the talent in the world but if you don't coach it, you don't teach fundamentals. They will never play to their potential.

I never saw GW or any of the D coaches, coach up the players. Our D backs dropped balls because... THEY WERE NOT LOOKING FOR THE BALL. They were looking to make a hit or a tackle because they were so weak at making a fundamental tackle. Take care and clean up the little things then everything will fall into place.

Sharper was a players coach. He coached and mentored everyone around him that is why we were good. Every play Sharper was congrats or showing them what they should have done or been. You never saw that from a coach. All they cared about is that the player blitzed when he was suppose to.

I don't think we really have all the talent though that we need on D. The secondary I like for the most part and you better keep your eye on Johnny Patrick. Our DE's and OLB so needs revamping. I don't even know why we drafted some of them. We should have been looking for SPEED and they got perhaps the slower group in the early rounds.

i dont think we have that much talent on d. some positions should perform regardless of scheme...DE being one of them. maybe some DE should have played more and that would be coaching fault but a player like will smith shoud perfrom regardless of scheme

I have to agree with you on this. What was GW teaching the D with his schemes. Too many times I watched Vilma and the Dline stay engaged with their blockers and not shedding them to find the ball carrier. Take P. Willis for instance, he pushes off of his blocker in a heart beat to go after the ball carrier whereas Vilma will stay engaged with his blocker. This had to be part of GW's scheme to take on the blockers and tie them up but it didn't work. Also his strip the ball first mentality didn't work either, you have to wrap up and hold up the ball carrier first then strip the ball with the second and third guy.

It was time for GW to go, the league had figured out his scheme here with the Saints, as long as Spags doesn't put our corners 10 yards off the ball on 3rd and 5 then he will have my support
