CBs the Saints could pick in 2012 draft

The New Orleans Saints aren’t hurting to choose a cornerback in the 2012 NFL Draft. But, if certain ones were to fall to them, they should consider their options.

The Saints are probably going to lose cornerback Leigh Torrence to free agency or flat out release him. He has played a role mainly on special teams and not much starting time.

If Torrence does make it to training camp, I don’t see him staying on and giving too much competition at the cornerback position.

Tracy Porter is also going to be a free agent and his status is up in the air. The last two seasons haven’t been his greatest for the Saints after a breakout year in 2009 enroute to the Super Bowl.

Porter will be looking for a nice contract that the Saints may not be able or willing to give him. If Porter and Torrence depart, then the Saints need to look to the NFL Draft to restock the roster.

While the needs for the Saints will be at defensive line or linebacker, they could wind up taking a cornerback if the right one falls to them much like they did in the third round last year when they picked Johnny Patrick

Hayward looks pretty good.

Did they forget about Patrick?

Leigh Torrence is a journeyman CB and could replaced in 3 seconds.

Porter has regressed to the point where's he's simply an average to slightly above average CB. He can be replaced with relative ease in free agency.

Why does anyone even bother with WhoDatDish? I can get the same amount of insight by linking to a random SR thread.

You can never have too many quality CBs on a roster. The added benefit of picking one from the draft - as opposed to the FA pool - is that they'll start learning from the new coaches immediately without having to "forget" some of the things they've been told to do earlier in their NFL careers, which could be opposite to what the coaches are looking for doing with the secondary schemes.

He did mention Patrick a few times. He said that the Saints "struck gold" in getting him and that he'll be competing for a spot in the CB rotation i.e. the nickel role.

I think he was only saying that the Saints might pick up a CB in the draft if the right guy is available at the right time, since the Saints usually take the BPA on their turn.

I think it's mainly for depth at this point, not necessarily for a potential starter.

Heyward in the 4th? I'll take that ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!! We could still get our DT & LB in the 2nd & 3rd and pick this guy up in the 4th? That'd be incredible. Then we can look at WR, OT, OG, G, & TE the rest of the way.

There is no doubt Sean Payton loves his corners......every since he came here he has been constantly trying to upgrade the CB position.

not really impressed with the cb in the middle of the draft. i really like the third round for talent worth the risk. not one of them a CB

late in the draft there is one or two.
