Why the Saints could keep or let UFA McBride go

DE Turk McBride was one of the more disappointing free-agent acquisitions leading up to the 2011 season. The Saints had high hopes after he had a solid 2010 season in Detroit, but McBride only had two sacks in 2011. McBride was a healthy inactive by the end of the season, so the Saints could easily move on without him.

Or

New Orleans can use any sort of pass rush it can find and DE Turk McBride, when healthy, could help. McBride went through a rash of injuries in 2011 and wasn’t a major factor last season.
The Saints could probably keep McBride on the cheap and see what he can do in Steve Spagnuolo’s defense.

I'm for keeping him on the cheap...CHEAP! He looked good early but did have injury problems. Also, we're going to have to find some cheap solutions to fill some of our holes if we're going to be able to keep the big 3.

I think we should either keep him and see what Spags can do or cut our losses and try to find someone else.

Least we can keep him for cheap, Spags could turn this guy into a player, if he can stay healthy

The reason why McBride might fit into what the Saints and Spags want to do next season may have very little to do with his fit ability-wise as opposed to how he fits into the system cap-wise.

The FA pool is not that great when it comes to DEs and those that would be great pick ups for the Saints may not be fit within their allotted cap space. Also, this coming draft class isn't really strong DE-wise, so it might be very hard for the Saints to find a rookie DE with starter (or regular rotation) potential.

Therefore, McBride might be a good short term player for the DE rotation, which under Spags will require a number of DEs in order to be effective. The Saints might look for the tackle position to make the biggest improvements in creating more pass rush, because the coming draft class is bountiful in regards to DTs that have potential to be day-1 starters.

Another way to go might be to try and draft players that have the potential and the ability to line up in various defensive positions like Ronnell Lewis the Oklahoma LB/DE and/or Derek Wolfe the Cincinnati DT/DE. And, consequently, this is the way I would like to see them go, because of the variety of defensive on field audibles it would make possible.

Bring him into camp and see from there. If he don't work out let him go. If he does fine. He might be hungry after last year's play. Although I can't just single him out on last years " No Show Defense".

another example of GW not getting the right players on the field maybe?? Or it could have been that he never fully recovered from the injury. Either way he played 3 games recorded 2 sacks and a force fumble. How could you be down on the guy? He had more sacks then cam in 13 less games lol...

Should absolutely keep him for next year, and as someone already mentioned he will be cheap.

Ronnell Lewis won´t be there in the 2nd round I fear.

He's a good backup to keep in the rotation.

Very true. We should keep him, and if we don't we should release him.

Keep him and follow his off season rehab fairly closely. How old is this guy anyway? It's harder to bounce back after a few years.

He is 26 (5/30/1985) so he should be fine age-wise.

He hasn't had a lot of injuries in his NFL career except for couple of short term injuries with the Chiefs, so that shouldn't be a concern for the Saints' FO.

Why not coach a rookie up to a defensive end position? I do believe it has been done before?

I'm thirsty. If I stand up, I'll get some water. If I stay here on this bench, I'll stay here.
