Scouts believe Meachem could have bigger FA impact than Colston

Robert Meachem - WR - Saints

According to the Boston Globe, some NFL scouts believe free agent Robert Meachem could have a bigger impact in an offense outside New Orleans than fellow free agent Marques Colston.

Meachem is almost just as big as Colston with equally as soft hands and much better long speed. The Globe's Greg Bedard says the Saints will "probably let Colston walk thinking (they) have Meachem in the bag" for cheaper, but it might not go as they plan. Meachem could be welcomed by a surprisingly hot market.

Wow, woefully inadequate comparison.

... yeah, that is kind of a stretch ... he might be welcomed in a suprisingly hot market because a team could get him cheaper then Colston, but to say he'd make a bigger impact in an offense outside of NO then Colston?

I could see it if he went to a low scoring team like St. Louis or Jacksonville that could use the WR help, but even then you have to figure a team that's willing to pay for a Colston is looking to fill that last spot needed to make a SB run, so which is the bigger impact?

Meachem has soft hands? Slippery maybe. Although, honestly he does seem to have gotten much better about not dropping the ball.
Colston is clutch. I've never been able to say that about Meachem. He and Henderson are basically interchangeable in my opinion.

Well I guess it all depends on the interpretation of the adverb "almost."

Colston is 77 inches while Meachem is 74 inches... granted that doesn't seem much of a difference, but when I look at the difference in the metric system (which is more familiar to me), there's an obvious difference: 195.6 cm versus 188 cm.

I would not call that "almost" as big... that would be more like 190-2 cm range, but I know it depends on one's own perception.

Looking at their combine results, Meachem does have an edge over Colston in speed - 40y/d, 4.39 vs 4.5 - but does that really warrant a statement like Meachem has "much better long speed?"

By the way, Henderson's 40 time was 4.41 back in the day.

Anyway, I'd much rather keep Colston around than Meachem, because like Rugby Saint already stated, Meachem and Henderson are in many ways interchangeable.

Meachem is a good player, but he's nowhere near colstons level, people may say that he is almost as big as colston but his physical build is nothing like colstons, meachem can't catch the tough passes over the middle that marques literally risks his body for to make a 7 yard catch

i agree to a point. i think he might thrive in a less cerebral offense

Let me take this opportunity to stick up for my boy... Robert Meachem.

Now, I don't have anything against Colston but he is not the 'big play' receiver that Meachem is in my opinion.

Can you guys not remember how many times Meachem has opened up a lead or turned the tide of a game with a long-ball touchdown? I mean... It happens more often than not!

Whether he's UNDER-appreciated or OVER-appreciated, I love me some Robert Meachem. I think my first post a couple years ago may have come in his praise.

Great fodder for speculation; agreed. But I love me some Robert Meachem. But not in a GHEY way!!!!! LOL

I do agree with some of the stuff you said Alaska, and that Redskins game will forever be a fond memory of Meachem's play-making ability, no matter whether he stays with the Saints or signs with another team.

The problem with Meachem is that he is more likely to be over-valued by other teams than Colston. By this I mean that the Saints more than likely have a figure in mind which they consider to be the fair market value for RM's services, as they do for Colston as well. My belief is that the Saints value Colston very high already, so there won't be a huge disparity between the Saints' market value and the FA pool market value - but there might a bigger disparity between the two when it comes to RM.

The days of the Saints having to overpay a player to come to NOLA are over and, therefore, they won't overpay a player to retain their services, because honestly there are many others who would jump at the chance of playing with the Saints - and even with a discount.

On the other hand, that is the same exact reason why I think that RM might stay with the Saints even if he gets better offers from other teams, because he might choose to have a better career instead of a slightly thicker wallet.

You're right, a team with a need for WR would be willing to up the ante on Meachem just to get somebody whereas the Saints already have a pretty good idea of his true market value. Let's hope Robert is one of those players who realizes a better career often outranks a slightly thicker wallet.

I gotta' agree with the 'big play' capability also, he made some pretty big catches against the Lions.
