Saints, Brees $5M/year apart on deal

According to Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole, the Saints and free agent Drew Brees remain "roughly $5 million a year apart" on a new contract.
That's a lot of ground to make up by Monday's franchise tag deadline. The Saints could free up $5 million by restructuring Will Smith's contract, and another $11 million by cutting MLB Jonathan Vilma and DT Sedrick Ellis. If the Saints are forced to use the exclusive franchise tag on Brees, they run the risk of losing both Marques Colston and Carl Nicks.

Vilma/Ellis, don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on your way out!!

Danno 03-01-2012 06:06 PM

5 million per year?

You have to be kidding me. You know Manning's contract was propbably the template. Are you telling me Brees wants 5 million more per year than Manning made?

We're getting prison raped.

Say bye-bye to ever upgrading our defense.

I heard yesterday that the Saints are offering 20-21 million and Condon was asking 24+

I'd tell Condon to shove it up his A$$.

21 Million, take it or we franchise Brees.

So much for that crap Drerw spewed about wanting to keep the team together.

No way Cole is correct.

I'm sure he is correct based on what I heard not from him. Condon has a way of milking things for what it's worth.

However, Brees if he meant what he said, should step in and should have stepped in awhile ago and taken what the Saints were offering. I think 21 is plenty since Manning turned down 20.

Anything over 23 and the Saints are non-playoff team based on what our cap we have to work with is.. A lot of veterans will be gone, anytime someone demands money they're gone because we can't match...

Sad.

blackangold 03-01-2012 06:30 PM

24mil+ per year
I don't know what to say about that if true.
I mean its Bress and all but I have a hard time thinking any one player is worth 20% of the entire teams payroll. If this is the true say goodbye to Vilma, Ellis, Colston, Nicks and Porter.

I do find this hard to believe. We currently have 20mil in cap space so if Bress wants 24mil he must know he is taking money away from everyone else...

I know this is overreacting to a situation we know nothing about at the moment but my opinion of Bress as person could change quite a bit.

I know I am crazy but for 24mil per year (which would cripple the franchise in the future) sign Manning for less and retain our FAs... I know I am nuts what am I thinking...

blackangold 03-01-2012 06:44 PM

20mil to work with

Solution:
Tag Bress-- This pays him 14mil per year

Restructure with Smith which frees 5mil
Cut Ellis freeing 6mil

That leaves enough money to sign Colston and Nicks. If Bress is unhappy so be it this isn't baseball where teams get a slap on the wrist for going over the cap.

According to Pro Football Talk... "According to a report from Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports, Loomis thinks Brees is very good, but not great. And therefore Loomis thinks Brees’s new contract should be commensurate with what a very good quarterback, but not a great quarterback, gets paid."

Maybe it shouldn't be "In Loomis We Trust."

Writers and their sources.

My sources are telling me I'm going to win the powerball soon.

ChrisXVI 03-01-2012 07:24 PM

Just passing along a report dude. We love the reporters when they tell us stuff we want to hear. Good luck with that powerball.

halloween 65 03-01-2012 07:29 PM

True facts. When I report good things I get praise, but anything negative, it's bash central.

Carl Nicks is cheering his ass off right now probably.

Papz, congratulations in advance on the powerball win. Now, would you like to assume the 5 year $24mm/year for Brees? Not to mention the $7mm/year for Colston, and $9mm/year for Nicks?

Think about it, you could be a hero! :)

Speedy Ron 03-01-2012 07:51 PM

what can you do with 24 mil that you cant do with 20????? condon is a ***** who doesnt give a hoot if we win or lose. he'll milk this deal so that all we have is brees and 3rd string defensive players. brees will end up hurt cause tennant will end up starting at center and DLP at guard. greedy bastard

Style 03-01-2012 08:01 PM

Don't blame the agent he is doing what the player wants.

foreverfan 03-01-2012 08:06 PM

The franchise tag is a terrible Drew.

C17-BING 03-01-2012 08:11 PM

I just can't see Brees not being smart enough to realize that at 24+ MIL a year he'll be the RICHEST NFL QB, but he'll also never win again. I'd like to believe that he's a team guy ... But if these reports are true and this team gets gutted ... Damn, back to insignificant we go.

In the end though ... I think it's all BS and everyone gets resigned and we make another run.

Byubengal 03-01-2012 08:14 PM

I do not put a hole lot of stock in that article. Who is to say that he is asking for 24 Mil and the Saints are only offering him 20 Mil. or that the Saints are offering 15 Mil. and he wants 20 Mil. (per year). What if the other "team players" are not playing? There is just not enough info in the article, mostly speculation. Those sources could just be blowing smoke up our you know whats..
I can not see Drew being that type of player, "greedy". He just does not come across as that type of person, but money does have a way of changing people. I posted earlier that I thought they were trying to work other deals with other players at the same time. Trying to make the money right for all of the big three. I still think that is the case and that ML and his staff are trying to get Drew what he deserves and they are more than likely running into issues with several of the other players involved. If any of the "Big 3" are playing "hardball" so to speak, I would think it might be Nicks. He has already given the impression that he would bolt for more money. I think MC will be compensated fairly and he wants to stay with Drew.
As far reworking some other contracts I think both Vilma and Ellis realize they are not going to get much on the open market if they get released so they would most likely be willing to work something out. I think there are a few others who could stand and are willing to rework their contracts as well.
No matter what happens, we will loose someone and as much as I would like to think Drew is not a greedy person, if that is his true nature then we don't need that type of player on the team, no matter how good he is, what he has done for the team or the city. I will hold fast to my belief that he deserves to be well compensated and that he is a man of integrity and wants to be here and that come Monday (hopefully sooner) he will be signed to a new deal that will allow him to retire a Saint. Then he can run for Governor and fix the state LOL

ChrisXVI 03-01-2012 08:17 PM

A lot of you are assuming that the Saints are offering 20 million a year and Drew wants more. What's up with that?

Style 03-01-2012 08:21 PM

"The franchise tag is a terrible Drew."

That is fine. Just means his price goes down next year.

A rumor circulated yesterday that the Saints were offering 20-21 and Condon wanted 24+. Then this came out today.

That's where.

And I'm just making a nonchalant comment... don't read too much into it dude. I'm not shooting the messenger.

ChrisXVI 03-01-2012 09:03 PM

I'm with ya papz... no internet drama here lol. I'm just frustrated with this whole thing like everyone else. I think this situation with Brees, Nicks and Colston is bad for every Saints fan's mental health!

SmashMouth 03-01-2012 09:18 PM

Are you ready for $12 beers yet at the dome?

Budsdrinker 03-01-2012 09:19 PM

We all know the Saints don't leak any information so if there is a report saying they are 5million apart it can only come from Condon. I really don't believe Drew would be this greedy. If Condon is really playing this game it would not surprise me if Drew doesn't leave his services. Drew can't say in public on record that he is trying to make a deal that will allow the saints the ability to sign the other top FA then turn around and try to break the bank. The fans will turn on him and I'm one that will. Drew is the best thing that has happen to the Saints and New Orleans but he is not worth 20 million a year. And if the reports are true about Loomis' comments, I kind of agree. Drew doesn't have the resume like Brady or Manning and doesn't deserve a larger contract than the two of them. Just my opinion.

Exactly... a rumor. If no-one wants to believe that Loomis could be offering Drew "average QB" money then we probably shouldn't believe that they are offering him 20 million a year.

ScottF 03-02-2012 08:17 AM

C'mon Cole.
Are you trying to tell us Brees wants 33% more than BRADY? You can't even use Manning as a measuring stick anymore, so don't even figure that in

The Dude 03-02-2012 08:40 AM

He wont get it. He knows that would gut the team and he is too much of a compeditor to let that happen. He has stated many times that his deal hinges on keeping core players on the team.

Condon is nothing more than a used condom. Slimy looking creep.
