Exclamation 'Severe, sweeping penalties' under consideration in Saints bounty case

The NFL is considering severe, sweeping disciplinary measures in the New Orleans Saints’ bounty case that could include lengthy suspensions of Coach Sean Payton, General Manager Mickey Loomis, former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and player leaders of the scheme, a person familiar with the deliberations said Sunday.

The person, speaking on the condition of anonymity because NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has not made final decisions on penalties, said some of the sanctions could be “unprecedented.” Payton and Loomis face discipline for failing to halt the practice of paying players for big hits on opponents. The bounty system was administered by Williams and involved 22 to 27 players, according to an NFL investigation revealed Friday.

The suspensions under consideration are a half-season or longer in some cases, the person said. Several other people in the sport said they expect Williams, now the defensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams, to be punished severly.

So they are going to suspend 27 players for half the season???? I'm sorry, but who exactly is going to play defense for us if that happens? The offense?

A bunch of free agents.

I bet Loomis, his head will roll. They lied to the owner of the team. They told him they would stop and they didn't.

I don't think Loomis is going anywhere.... This investigation has been going on for three years, and everyone from top to bottom knew about it..... Now here's a thought.... What if EVERYONE knew about it? And everyone is just posturing for the media?

They can consider such nonsense all they want, as long as the don't actually do it. That would just be ridiculous. You can't suspend coach for half the season, least of all all of those players... some of whom aren't even with us anymore. It's just ludicrous.

Hope this "leak" is just bluster to look big and bad, and then, when it is all said and done, they just levy fines, take a draft pick or two, and give us a stern talking to.
