Sign Peyton Manning

Since he's going to be released, why not have him as the QB? I'm sure he'd be grateful to play for his hometown team, in a system that matches his abilities.

Hell, makes everyone in the organization bolt upright and alert! (ahem, that means you, Drew...)

Ashley 03-07-2012 10:12 AM

How wild of a ride that would be. Oh how this has become the craziest of season. I hate it

SapperSaint 03-07-2012 10:16 AM

If I was Loomis......

You're darn right I would bring him in. If Drew wants to fiddle fart around with 5 million... I would do it out of spite.

SIGN THE DADBURN CONTRACT DREW!

lee909 03-07-2012 10:19 AM

If we don't pay up to keep Drew I doubt Tom Condon would do make it easy for us to sign Manning.
He would demand the same sort of money IMO.

|Mitch| 03-07-2012 10:22 AM

no way Peyton would be able to get that kind of money, coming off numerous surgeries this past year...

lee909 03-07-2012 10:24 AM

I don't think he would anywhere else but I could see Condon making life difficult unless Manning got involved himself.

Euphoria 03-07-2012 10:30 AM

I am on the fence with this one but I say no.

We'd have the same problem with Manning as Drew. Money is going to be a lot and we tagged Drew to save some money so far.

Both players have 2-3 years left max I figure. I keep Drew tag him another year and then ask him to retire so we can move on.

FinSaint 03-07-2012 11:31 AM

The only way I'd see this as worth while would be if PM was actually (guaranteed) healthy enough to play at his pre-injury level, and if the Saints were able to make a trade for Brees and get the two 1st rounders in return for him - since exclusive rights FA doesn't mean that the team holding the rights can't negotiate with other teams.

Under those circumstances I'd see the trade as a definite possibility, because like already stated, PM would come with baggage and, therefore, he would undoubtedly sign for less than Brees.

Also, the Saints might then bring in Wayne and Garcon to replace Colston and Meachem, although that would be a downgrade.

Halo 03-07-2012 11:44 AM

Sounds like a real fairytale story because Manning is from NOLA.
But what if he's hurt to where he can't play an entire season?

No one has seen him throw a pass since his 4th surgery on his neck...

Saint_LB 03-07-2012 11:46 AM

FWIW...I heard somewhere that Peyton was willing to restructure his contract in a way where he would be paid minimal or even no guaranteed money and have it all structured on performance. I don't know whether he was referring to for the Colts or anyone...but at that price it would be a decent deal.

I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't offer that to the Saints unless Drew was out of the picture...and I don't think he has time to wait to see how that is all gonna unfold.

TheOak 03-07-2012 11:54 AM

Nope! Why would I sign a near end of career QB to replace a near end of career QB? One hit and Payton could go down. Pay Brees and be done with it.

As the OP was worded.... We can not afford both.

Are we actually going to let go of THE most productive QBs in the last 3 years for 5mil?

Besides..... Manning and Paton are not a good personality match... Should we pick up Caldwell too?!?!?!

There is no way Manning settles for a performance based contract. He will get a premium contract because the demand is there.

saints1234 03-07-2012 12:21 PM

This cant really be a thread is it....... come on y'all cant be throwing Brees under the bus for this yea its pretty bad that they cant come to agreement on it and its between 5 mill. But come on ppl have yall forgot who was and still is the savior of this Franchise its DREW BREES......this talking about replacing him with Peyton Manning is by far one of the dumbest Threads on here, Brees deserves every penny of the money that hes asking for and the Saints better pay it and keep him happy...With out Brees this team would not have a Super Bowl Title and be as good as it is........

Peyton Manning can take a hike

One hit and ANY QB can go down. Manning has been cleared by all doctors, including the Colts' own neurosurgeon. They have all said that Manning faces no more of a chance of getting injured than any other QB in the league.

That said, he has zero chance of ever being a Saint as Brees will definitely be here for the remainder of his playing career.

saintfan 03-07-2012 12:26 PM

What I would do if I were in charge - and sadly I'm not - is bring Manning in for a conversation. Feel it out. No disrespect to Drew, because if Drew doesn't want to sign his 'richest contract ever' deal that's his choice. If he is willing to play under the franchise tag at 14.whatever million then he's still my first choice.

BUT, if he's not planning to sign, then I'm at least going to have a conversation with Manning. That's just smart business.

Rugby Saint II 03-07-2012 12:31 PM

I have mixed feelings because I haven't heard from Drew what the problem is and I haven't developed a dislike for him yet either. I am giving him the benefit of the doubt. However, Peyton would have a very strong line to protect him if he came here which I'm sure is a high priority for him.

NOLA54 03-07-2012 12:33 PM

I'm certain Peyton wants to go out a champion. He won't be able to do that with the teams that will be in pursuit of him. The Saints would be a good option for him but I don't think they will consider it.

And you won't hear from Drew what the problem is because Condon doesn't want him talking about it.

That being said.... Plug Peyton Manning into the Texans and imagine what could happen. With their running game, defense.... Scary thought of lining across from Johnson, Manning, Foster....

jokeray 03-07-2012 12:49 PM

I was thinking 49ers...they would be frickin great with manning in there.

and i HATE the 49ers.

I disagree. While I don't like the idea I can certainly respect the outside the box thinking.

He's a Saints fan before he's a Brees fan. If Brees doesn't want to play here then we need to review options.

If anything he's being more of a WhoDat fan than those willing to handcuff the rest of the team just to please Drew Brees.

I think its a bad idea, but it has nothing to do with his WhoDatness.

Mardigras9 03-07-2012 12:59 PM

Drew is our QB.

I disagree.

Drew is a guy that has been tagged because he doesn't want the contract Loomis put in front of him. A TAG, that Drew has not signed yet. So right now he is a QB that is holding out for 5 million dollars and is handicapping the team right now. That what Drew is.

Look I love Drew. I want him here til he retires. I want a 20 foot bronze statue of the guy in front of the Dome. But I broke one of my rules as a Saints fan.... I can't get attached to One player. I love this team more than I love Drew. If Drew really wanted what was best for this team... he would have signed that contract last week and the only thing we'd be talking about on this site is the stupid "BountyGate" crap.

Buuuuuttttt Noooooooooooo; Drew wants 5 million more on the front end of his contract. Bullocks!

I get ya, but its so soon to say with that though. Who knows what Peyton can do at the moment. I wasn't meaning screw all other QBs Brees all the way. Rather, there's a lot of time left before we need to push this button. That's me though.

If it does not work out with Brees, I'd rather have a lesser "big name" QB that has many more years than what Drew or Peyton have and flourishes in NO.:bng:

SapperSaint 03-07-2012 01:12 PM

Clause, there just isn't that many up and coming QB's out there.

Even Matt Flynn is going to get a heavy contract this year.

Whodatness?

I just love the American language.

ok, here ya go, my contribution to Webster's...

whodatness ('hü-dät-'nəs) noun. 1. quality, state or fact of being a whodat. 2. The degree of tribal chanting, incantations and emotional commitment related to affiliation to the Greater New Orleans Area (GNOA), New Orleans Saints professional football team, any GNOA formal or informal team or organization, and/or alcohol serving establishment.

Nicely done.

Your forumness is on target today.

Euphoria 03-07-2012 02:08 PM

ok think about this...

We sign Manning.

Trade Drew for 2 draft pics so in case we lose picks over Bounty gate we make up for it by the trade. Not that I think losing draft picks hurt us I really don't think that does... you can make up for it via FA but... something I would consider if I can see Manning throw the football.

Why do you refuse to see that this is not Brees making this call? Condon put that number out there because that is what Manning's deal was. The overall Manning deal is slightly less than what Condon wants for Brees, an average of $18+ million per year. The key hold up is that Condon demanded $24 million per year for the first three years because Manning got $23 million. He knew that the Saints don't have the cap room to cover that right now and stay viable. He knew they'd have to tag Brees and let his other client, Carl Nicks go to the open market. Now that the deed is done watch for a more cap friendly version of the deal to get done for the same overall number.

Stop blaming Brees. It is all a part of the negotiating game and the players always agree to let there agents run the show.

:whatever:

lynwood 03-07-2012 04:25 PM

In Indy Manning Ran the Offense

Here Payton runs the Offense and Brees delivers.

It just wouldn't work.

This. I've been reading alot about representation in the last few days and anyone who thinks Drew Brees has stepped one foot in the room so far is an ignoramus. In all likelihood communication between Brees and Loomis is entirely cut off.
Every couple days this conversation happens over the phone:
Condon says "They are offering you 18m/year" Drew might say "That sounds like a good deal, let's get it done." to which Tom says "Don't let them low-ball you Drew, you have, at worst, the same contribution as Peyton and he is getting X, you shouldn't accept any less than X+1, and I'll get you X+1, just give it some time." "Okay Tom, call me for dinner when you are back in town." "Say hi to Brit for me, bud, talk to you later."

Then Drew turns off the TV and the internet and totally cuts off from sports news until the deal is done.
This is particularly enlightening: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...YiqK72_N1M05UQ

We tagged Drew but he has not signed anything...big difference. Keep all options open. Bringing in Peyton could send a clear message to Drew's agent; We'll pay Drew but you are going to have to bend.

Peyton's agent is the same as Drew's agent.
Condon would basically say "okay, so you have both of my QBs, who we both know are worth the same amount, write up the contract I already asked for and you can pick whichever one you want."

There is absolutely 0 chance that Peyton will get the kind of money that Drew will get this year; not with 4+ neck surgeries and his health in doubt...
