Chargers, Giants discuss trade for top pick

Kerry Collins is in the last year of his contract hoping for a long term extention which won\'t happen if the Giants draft any of the top 3 QBs. Should they trade with the Chargers and pick Eli Manning they will want to start the rookie from day one. The cost to move up from 4 to 1 will be steep. Collins could be part of the bait as one of the players/picks involved. He is capable of throwing for 4,000 yards with average receivers and an average running game but requires an above average OL that can protect well. The bolts offer better playmakers for him at the skilled positions but would require better line play. Collins still has a few good years in front of him and won\'t want to ride the pine. Also, Marty needs to win now!

Name one other than Tomlinson. They have nobody.

Tim Dwight, Kevin Dyson aren\'t exactly superstars but can make plays. When the Chargers take all of what the Giants have to offer they will be able to pluck at least one of the top WRs in the draft which will then will be more than what the Giants have been working with. Tomlinson alone equals all of the playmakers the G-men had last year.

I forgot they signed Dyson.

Hopefully for them Reche Caldwell will blossom this season.

I find that doubtful. The Chargers aren\'t looking for another average (or a bit above) QB. They already have a young guy in Drew Brees. Is he the guy they want, doubtful, but he can cover for now. Then they have a great veteran/teacher, with Doug Flutie, who they just signed for another 3 years. Flutie will be able to mentor whichever young stud QB that they pick up this year, while Brees does his best not to loose too many games until the newbe is ready to get his feet wet.
I\'m not saying I don\'t think that the Chargers will trade down, I just don\'t think that they will look to trade down for Collins or someother QB as bait. But I still think that it is safer for the Chargers to keep #1 and pick up Eli, than to trade him away.
