NFL.com news: Saints' Carl Nicks determined to be NFL's richest guard

Quote:

“I don’t wanna sound cocky or anything, but I busted my butt for four years, I made a couple Pro Bowls," he said. "For my first three years, I was the lowest paid guard of all the starting guards in the NFL. And I never complained, I never held out, I came in early to sign my tender when no one else was doing that.

"I’ve been dedicated to the team and I’ve proven my stats speak for itself," he said. "I just feel like I should get paid what I deserve.”
- Nicks

He's good enough at his position to be the highest paid. At least he's not all "I'm a team guy" for the sake of his image. I have to give him some points for saying it like it is.

gandhi1007 03-12-2012 04:33 PM

Nothing wrong with what he said. He's right! He's proven on the field that he is one of the best guards in the league & deserves to be paid as such.

LBCutta 03-12-2012 04:37 PM

Our system has made stars out of these dudes now where is the loyalty. Same as Colston, he wont nearly be as good somewhere else. As for Nicks, He's be the highest paid guard playing for a 2-14 team next year too.

My point is he's telling you straight up, "Look, I've paid my dues. I've been loyal. Now it's about the money."

I can't hate on him for that. It's not like we just finished paying him 60 million over 5 years...cough...cough... :brood:

LOL good Point

FinSaint 03-12-2012 05:17 PM

He is unquestionably better than Mankins, so I see nothing wrong with him demanding higher pay, because there are teams out there who'll pay him that money.

I wish we could've used the tag on him. :-(

He wouldn't have signed it.

You think that he would've sat out the whole season instead?

Danno 03-12-2012 05:26 PM

Hmmm. hometown discount?

"I know I've said I want to be paid a certan amount, but at the end of the day I said I want to be back with the Saints, and I'm waiting on any kind of offer," Nicks said. "My goal is to get more than ($8.5 million per year). I feel like I deserve that. But I never told them, 'If you guys are in the ball park, I wouldn't consider it.' I play with Drew Brees. We always have a chance to win. That counts for a lot."

SaintsBro 03-12-2012 05:29 PM

The whole idea of using the tag on Nicks was kind of a mirage anyway. It works on paper, but you can't do that to a player in the real world, and make them mad... when stuff like that gets ugly it gets very very ugly. You do not want to have a disgruntled guard on your team, in such a key position as that, with a one-year deal he doesn't want and an attitude problem, in your locker room, costing you $9 million a year, grumbling, holding out in camp, taking plays off, that is a recipe for disaster.

There will be no hometown discount for Carl Nicks. Not going to happen.

If that's what it took to get a deal. Although, he would have signed it week ten so he didn't lose a year of service.

ScottF 03-12-2012 07:19 PM

I think he was considering less of a home town discount, and more of playing on a winning team. This guy is not signing with Minnesota or Cleveland.

We saved $2-3 million a year on the guy for the past 2 years, so locking him down for 6 yrs 55 mill shouldn't be hard to swallow

Beastmode 03-12-2012 07:42 PM

I no longer like him. Has he paid his dues, yes, but so have the Saints. He was a later round pick that was developed. If he was a Willie Roaf caliber OL then ok, but he isn't and for him to be spouting off about his situation when it was the Saints who molded him...he's out of line. One way or anothor he'll get paid I just wish he'd shut his mouth. Obviously the Saints can't keep everyone. I'm really not understanding what he's so pissed about when it's the nature of the NFL..you progress to a point where other less fortunate teams need your services for a premium price. Dude, you are about to get a raise. So is Colston. So is Brees. We can't keep everyone.

nicebush25 03-12-2012 07:48 PM

his points are valid

jcp026 03-12-2012 08:19 PM

He said he's been the lowest paid starting guard in the league for past couple of seasons. He's a great player and he deserves a pay day that we can't give him. He's not super rich...yet.

bobdog86 03-12-2012 08:44 PM

Straight up front honesty, you can't blame a cat for that. I'd rather pay the man after he's earned it rather than pay the dude up front and he fizzles.
"Remember people...... Reward not Bribe" that's the way it should be. He deserves it, if he leaves to get it great for him, if he stays great for us. i got no problem with it.

I still love him. Sorry.

saintsfan1976 03-12-2012 10:06 PM

I'd have more respect for him if he'd said he wants to win more superbowls with the Saints.

Marlboro Man 03-13-2012 12:01 AM

I just hope he doesn't go to Atl.

Rugby Saint II 03-13-2012 12:35 PM

He was one of the lowest paid guards because we got him later in the draft because of character concerns. We took a chance on him and it paid off.
I have to say he's earned his money and deserves a raise.

TheOak 03-13-2012 12:57 PM

It is nice to see that some players realize they do not make the Saints..... The Saints make them!

Bree's makes his recievers, and not only with the pass. The mentoring he has given Graham has been invalueable in Grahams career so far.

You have to give some props to Shockey as well when it comes to Graham's development.
