Player's Union asks NFL to delay Saints punishment

1 Attachment(s)
NEW YORK (AP) – The players' union wants the NFL to delay announcing any punishment to the New Orleans Saints for their bounty program until it can conduct its own investigation.

NFLPA spokesman George Atallah told The Associated Press on Tuesday that "We asked the league to hold off on any punishment until our information gathering was completed."

The union said last week that members of its legal team would investigate the program the NFL says gave thousands of dollars in payoffs to players for hits that knocked targeted opponents out of games. The NFL said the amounts reached their height in 2009, the season the Saints won the Super Bowl.

I'm unsure on this, unless the players union think the evidence is unsound wouldn't it be better to get whatever punishment comes out the way ASAP?

I bet they're just making sure they're covering their own ass. Can't have players leading the player union make out to be hypocrites later on. How would it look if someone like Ray Lewis was found to be running the same sort of stuff after the fact?

We have a winner.

They certainly have their own agenda. It almost sounds like they have something up their sleeve & I don't mean an ace. Just what are they planning to do with their investigative information? It seems suspicious to me. "Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get me."

Survive & Thrive.

I think it's best to drag it on as long as possible. The draft is approaching and it will soon be forgotten. Let them issue punishments during the season for next offseason or whatever.

If the union finds that the problem is wide spread, and lots of retired players are joking about it, then singling out the Saints to make an "example of" may not be fair. What about Washington and Buffalo? GW ran the same scheme there... will they be punished?

Now they're doing something worthwhile and constructive with their time!I 'd buy them a steak to share for this:chef:

Or they are looking for an angle to protect the players and let the Coaches and Franchises take the fall.

The player's union wants to advocate for no penalties for the players and pin it all on Williams, Loomis and Payton, but they have to make sure that they have the evidence to back it up.

Rip the band aid off, time to move on

Looks like it ,and the NFL made it clear that they warned the Saints to stop using the system in 2009 and they said they will, but didnt. That is why the organization and the coaches are going to get hit . Lets put it this way :

-Players and GW put this system in place - they should be blamed and punished;
-The Saints organization was warned to stop using the system (reportedly,i didnt hear anything about it at the time) - they should also be blamed and punished .

I have no idea if the league will consider the players or the Saints organization the main culprit ,but i would hope it is the players,if its the team i fear we get some kind of draft picks removed or some other heavy crap.

I really really HATE De Smith and the NFLPA.

Problem is... If you punish the players, which ones were involved? I am sure they are all honest and will fess up..

If you punish all players involved.... you punish other teams, some of those players have moved on.

I do not find it difficult to believe that Brees didn't know what was going on with the Defense. They are separate entities... I do have trouble even considering that Fujita wasn't a big part of it being on our Defense and one of the Defensive leaders...

SapperSaint 03-14-2012 07:31 AM

In a way I want this over and done with. I hope the NFLPA is doing this for the entire NFL from top to bottom and not just for their own agenda.
