Saints have done well in free agency under the circumstances

1 Attachment(s)
Finally, Saints fans can relax.

With the signing of Ben Grubbs this morning, New Orleans has accomplished almost everything it could have to save its record-breaking offense in one of the most important free-agent periods in its history.

Yes, Drew Brees isn’t under a long-term contract and yes it seems highly unlikely from reading the tea leaves that he’ll play under the franchise tag.

But that’s a completely different matter, one that few truly believe won’t end happily for both player and team.

When we began this offseason, there was little belief the Saints could keep all three of their biggest free agents.

Marques Colston was looking for big money and so was Carl Nicks.

To get all three, including Brees, would have destroyed the salary cap.

Or so we thought.

With the Saints being so close to the cap, I've been pleased with the signings they have made so far, time to go get some defensive help

I am not pleased yet...

I haven't seen much yet to get excited about.

I think its still way to early to decide how they have done in FA.

It is what it is. We were going to lose some big names regardless.

We drafted Meachum, and Nicks, and if Porter goes he was drafted as well.

I'd look to the draft for the long term replacement and hope the fill in's can get us through this season.

So far so good. We're just getting started.

I guess the fact that we haven't lost ground at any position yet is good. We were up against the wall cap wise and with Drew wanting so much money it looked like we may lose several quality players.

Basically resigning Colston and replacing an all-world OG with an all-pro OG is our biggest drop off, which in the big picture is insignificant (on paper).

defense? no improvement until there's an impact LB signed.

How do the draft picks fit into the salary cap? Does anybody know how much money they have to work with?

hagan714 03-17-2012 01:48 AM

common on we all knew this day was coming. only so long can you keep pushing contracts back with one year deals and tags.

Given the players up for FA i have to say not too too bad. Colston over Nicks? not sold on that move but Grubbs is not a bad second option. plus he will not cause cap problems for the years to come.

Get ready to bit the bullet and go with bench depth, draft picks and a mix of FA for 2012.

Now comp picks in our future for nicks porter and mech?

Are the Saints really doing well in free agency?

The Saints have only resigned Colston and brought in a decent replacement to Nicks with Ben Grubbs. What about all of the other free agents they let slip through the cracks?

The Saints lost Robert Meachem and havnt picked up anybody to replace him yet. The best of the recievers pool have already been signed:

Vincent Jackson signed with Tampabay where Nicks will definitely be making an impact against us twice a year. It was bad enough that ths Saints had to deal with Nicks blocking for the run, but now they have Jackson? Common man!!! As if Mike Williams wasn't enough by himself. Throw Kellen Winslow and LeGarrette Blount into the mix and the Saints are going to have a hard time covering both the run and the pass. We will be lucky to pull off 1 win against them this year.

The Falcons resigned John Abraham and Harry Douglas, signed Vince Mauwal and linebacker Lofa Tatupu from free agency, and retained much of their team from 2011. Their roster boasts one of the most prolific defenses in the league with players such as Abraham, Grimes, Biermann, Babineaux, Tatupu, Lofton, and Decoud. They suffered a demoralizing loss in the playoffs last year to the Giants and will be looking for some pay back this season. We might even see a NFC championship game between the SAINTS and FALCONS this year. Lets just hope our team brings its best game. Superbowl at home is what its all about.

The Panthers waived defensive tackle Demario Pressley and signed Haruki Nakamura. They havn't been very active in the free agency thus far and seem to be relying on their existing core of defensive players. Which brings me back to the question of are the SAINTS really doing well in free agency?

Who is left?

Check out this kffl free agent tracker:
KFFL - 2012 NFL Free Agents

Here are the picks I think are still good for us:
WR:
Bernard Berrian, Deion Branch, Plaxico Burress, Early Doucet, Braylon Edwards, Ted Ginn Jr, T.J Houshmandzadeh, "Mike Wallace", and Hines Ward.
TE:
Dallas Clark, Visanthe Shiancoe, and Jeremy Shockey.
DL:
Brodrick Bunkley, Shaun Ellis, Brandon Mckinney, Rob Ninkovich, Kyle Love, Demario Pressley, ....... To be continued. LOL, sorry...I lost my train of thought. Damn graveyard shifts.
