Are they really as good as they look or are their stats inflated because they're a "product" of the Saints well-oiled passing "system?"
I think he has this backwards. I think their stats are deflated because Drew spreads the ball around to every eligible receiver dressed in black and gold.

Yeah, of course it doesn't hurt that you have one of the best QBs ever throwing the ball and an offensive master like SP drawing up the plays you run, but like you said - these guys would probably get more chances to show their true worth and abilities in a different system.

In Meachem's case I think he was made better not by Drew but by the group of receivers which resided in NO in his time here, no nonsense guys, quiet, about business guys your never here our WRS complaing about how many balls there getting, not getting. It is an environment which breeds " be ready when your number is called"

In the case of a good receiver, this is true, but in the case of a bad receiver, the system can get them open when they wouldn't normally be able to get open, it can get them in matchups that are favorable when normally they wouldn't play against that corner. A good system will take someone who is having an off day and move in a new piece, minimizing your bad days (in terms of mistakes) and maximizing your good ones. All of these things change when you go into a traditional WR1, WR2 scenario, when you have to make those things happen on your own, every play, by knowing the playbook, knowing your opponent, and executing. In the Saints system a lot of that is done by Payton and Drew for the players.

As long as the Chargers know there is no buyers remorse if he isn't as effective as he was with the Saints.

cant be that old of a question..brees has only been here for 6 years (?)...
but i totally agree. most of our wr wont be affective with other qbs. our wr dont have seperation skills at all.

I think its a little bit of both if that makes any sense.

good points, and Meachem barely saw the field for two years

These are better 'old' questions:
1) Was Meachem, with 141 catches in 4 years, a 'bust'?
2) Why do teams overpay for our players?
3) Why can't we get long-term production from our #1 picks?

It is a bit of the chicken/egg quandry isn't it?

He will still have a running game and a good QB. He might just do alright. I hope so.

TheOak 03-19-2012 07:29 AM

He does not make much sense....

as if the Saints well oiled passing system is not a sum of its parts.

SaintsBro 03-19-2012 10:57 AM

Joe Horn
Donte Stallworth
Terence Copper
Reggie Bush

This isn't the first time a Saints receiver has "left the nest" and gone somewhere else to another team. All those guys above, have left the Saints, and done basically "not a whole lot" with their respective new teams. Well Reggie of course did very well as a RUNNING BACK but there's no denying his receiving numbers were way down from the kind of numbers he had when he was here.
