Ok, you can make an argument for Ellis because there MAY be talent there. But Shanle??? This guy has to be on the brother-in-law contract because he knows someone. $3 MILLION????? Thats the worst payroduction ratio I've heard since Jamarcus Russell

I know its been asked before, but I haven't seen a decent answer.

If Shanle is as bad as player as so many people claim, why hasn't ANYONE taken his starting role from him?

Maybe if the players that could replace him wouldn't get injuried, he would be gone.

Heard of favoritism? OR maybe...the LB coach is just as bad as he is and he thinks Shanle is good? Which would explain why our LB's have sucked for so long.

I don't really get your point.

All of those "big salary" guys are either on their 2nd or 3rd contracts except for Ellis who was a high 1st round pick under the former CBA with higher rookie salaries.

Jed Collins had bounced around the league trying to find a team and was probably willing to sign for peanuts just to have a roster spot, whereas the Saints went after Hall to sign him away from the Packers to be a ST contributor.

Do you think Brown should be payed more than that? Bushrod will be entering the 2nd year of his 2-year contract, and he is fairly affordable when it comes to LT contracts.

I think Casillas got the minimum tender of ~$1.3M, which is fair because he hasn't shown that he can stay healthy long enough to make a real contribution - I have no excuse for the salary Shanle is making.

Herring was another one who was signed away from the Seasquaks, so he got a fairly reasonable contract which includes a lot of escalator clauses - for what they thought they'd be getting from him, he wasn't really over-payed. Wilson is getting payed what the new CBA pretty much designates for a rookie who was picked where he was picked in the draft.

And Vilma was given a fair contract IMO for the production he was estimated of being able to give to the Saints, and which he did up until late 2010 season when his knees started to act up. If he was playing at a 100% level, that salary would be on the cheap side - and the fact that he isn't was something they couldn't really estimate and build into the contract at the time it was drawn up.

If I'm looking at that list right we should have about 7.8 million in cap space left after the rollover and 3.6 before the rollover, so we still have a bit of room to work with.

Fin, thanks. You got the point. It is information shared with a group of people who share a passion (Saints) which instigates discourse.

Is Vilma's cap number big enough to allow bringing in Lofton and Woodyard if he's released? Is Big Sed's cap number big enough to allow us to bring in Luis Castillo and Amobi Okoye? I like both of them but we have holes to fill and need depth...And, oh yeah, cut Shanle for goodness sake.

I think Sed Ellis needs to go.. or be restructured and make less money. His production to salary is horrible and probably one of the worst in the league.

Restructuring has its problems, since I don't think Ellis would be willing to simply take a pay cut, so they would have to offer him an extension in order to bring down the annual cap hit.

So instead of this season being his last, there'd be more years to follow, which of course might not be a bad thing if Spags is finally able to light a fire under his butt.
