Is it possible that when Benson & Payton were talking to the league, they were told what the punishments were going to be and then the league 'flipped the script on them'?

Doubt it...

Even though, Payton was adamant that he was only getting a 4 game suspension...

Still I don't think he knew before hand...

....I think they might have been given the impression of the severity of the punishment (not told exactly what it would be), but then the NFL decided that they had to step up the punishment at some point afterwards!

I doubt that, because the investigation was still ongoing in affect since they were still hearing people on the issue, like GW.

They had to hear some of the people mixed up in the issue personally before they could make the decisions on what the punishments would be, so I don't think they could've even been told the punishments if the league would've wanted to.
