METAIRIE, La. -- The NFL hit the Saints with some of the most severe penalties ever levied against any professional sports team Wednesday, and they won’t stop there. Commissioner Roger Goodell said that player penalties will be next on his agenda, and those could wind up being the most costly of all.
The most jaw-dropping news on Wednesday was that the Saints will lose coach Sean Payton for a full year, beginning April 1 – something that no NFL team has ever had to face. After being found guilty of running an illegal bounty program from 2009-2011, the Saints will also forfeit a second-round draft pick in 2012 and 2013. They’ll lose general manager Mickey Loomis for eight games during the 2012 regular season, and they’ll lose linebackers coach/assistant head coach Joe Vitt for six games. They could eventually lose veteran defensive leaders like linebacker Jonathan Vilma and others to suspensions. It’s as close to the “death penalty” as any NFL team has ever seen. And yet, it’s not a death penalty. If there is any silver lining for the Saints, it’s that they are one of the organizations best built to absorb such a heavy blow. We are a well built organization and the next man up will rise to the occasion... we need to believe that. Surely the lost of Payton is damaging as well as the lost draft picks, but we'll weather this storm. There's a whole year of Saints football ahead of us and it sure beats a lock out. :bng: |

From this day going forward I will hate commissioner Roger Goodell. Suspending Sean for a year... without pay. Either one of those would have been good enough, but both? This man is a draconian dictator. I agree we needed some form of punishment but this is overboard. I work with Cowboy fans and they cannot even believe he did this to us...

The only part they missed is that the next man us is about 22-27 down on defense.

The bright side to losing 20 players on defense.
If the SAints lose 20 players due to suspensions on defense that will open up alot of cap space to go out and buy some decent defensive players. Can anybody think of another bright side to this?

Sean gets a job at the dome with security to keep the dome rafters safe. :)
20 players sitting on defense? no way. but it will force the saints to use their bench. plus if the nfl does not force the saints to eat the cap numbers drew is signed and a some good players can be had. But i am affraid that by the time this all goes down the Union will drag this out so long there will very little to pick through |
