LB Chris Chamberlain close to signing

Larry Holder ‏ @LHolderCBS

Nothing is eminent, but I'm hearing some positive momentum that #Rams LB Chris Chamberlain could sign with the #Saints.

Stay tuned.

Awesome, is the guy any good? Is he an OLB?

FinSaint 03-23-2012 09:51 AM

I thought that he was the LB most likely to sign with the Saints, because he will be the most affordable out of them and due to his relationship with Spags.

But he is an OLB, so do we see Shanle moving on?

Would make this a glorious day!!!

From all I've read he's a decent OLB who knows Spags system well, but nothing spectacular.

But I wonder, is decent an upgrade over what we have? I tend to think so.

I agree.

He has pretty good size and from what I've read he does have good movement ability on the field - he played the weak-side linebacker with the Rams/Spags if I remember correctly.

st thomas 03-23-2012 10:01 AM

if spags changing system see u later shanle. i hope we pick up a jewel in the third rd. lb i hope, its what i'm hearing.

CharityMike 03-23-2012 10:02 AM

Just scowered Youtube and can find NO highlights of this guy. Is that a bad sign?

He was a 7th round draft pick, so don't expect a lot of college tape to be available for the guy, and he wasn't a star in the Rams' s system, so he probably doesn't have many die-hard fans.

Chris Chamberlain

Chamberlain played better than expected on the weakside. He graded out overall with a 3.6 mark from PFF, second only to James Laurinaitis. His numbers won't blow anyone away, but he was consistently positive against the run. In coverage, Chamberlain did well, but struggled against Vernon Davis ... as did most linebackers assigned to cover him.

—LB Chris Chamberlain improved his game in 2012 and was solid on the weak side. He has also been one of the club's best special teams player.
St. Louis Rams Team Report - USATODAY.com

Chris Chamberlain, OLB, Rams. Age: 26.
Chris Chamberlain is a special teams ace and a solid reserve/two-down spot starter at linebacker. He plays well against the run, but gets lost in coverage.

You know if he can be a younger version of Shanle when he was good, it certainly wouldn't be a bad thing.

FinSaint 03-23-2012 10:17 AM

This is a short evaluation of him from the Rams' site:

Quote:

Chamberlain was a bit of a revelation on the weakside last year. Finally healthy and given a chance to contribute on defense, Chamberlain proved to be a solid tackler, good in coverage and rarely out of position.

In addition, Chamberlain remains a core special teams player. All of that might make Chamberlain the team’s most desirable free agent and a player the team will likely make a push to retain even if it’s with the idea of having him provide depth and special teams acumen.

Chamberlain sounds much like Nate Bussey to me. About the same size, speed, 7th round pick, and talent..IMHO.

darstep 03-23-2012 10:52 AM

If he can just stay upright and get to the ball, he will be OK, that's if we sign him.
I am hoping for some interior D-line help from the draft or FA.
I believe Smith and Jordan would get elevated if someone can get some push up the middle.

Danno 03-23-2012 11:19 AM

From PFF...

Underrated linebacker Chris Chamberlain will be visiting with the New Orleans Saints. Coming off a decent 2011 where he made some plays when he got on the field, Chamberlain would offer an upgrade to a Saints linebacker group that has been amongst the worst in the league for a long time. He earned a +3.6 rating in 2011.

RaginCajun83 03-23-2012 11:20 AM

Anyone at this point besides Shanle is an improvement, but this just reeks of a bottom of the trash bin signing

Marlboro Man 03-23-2012 11:35 AM

I think a lot of folks don't remember what it was like with the LB's before we got Shanle, Fujita and Vilma. I think we've been spoiled. Sucks that we can't get better than Chamberlain but if it's an improvement, it's an improvement. We have to make small steps right now. Personally, in the FA market, I'd prefer the LB from the Hawks but we've only got so much money to spend and a small improvement is still improvement.

Or, at the very least, he helps guys transition to Spagnuolo's system...

We have to remember that CLOSE only counts in Horse Shoes, Hand Grenades, Sawed off Shotguns, Smart Bombs, Atomic Bombs, Predator Drones......................................

Marlboro Man 03-23-2012 12:37 PM

I swear I'm really starting to dislike Jeff Duncan, you hear that Jeff. I hardly read any of your crap these days.

It's not as simple as Benson telling Loomis to get Drew Brees signed. Ya wanna know why?? Come on, say it with me,
WE.....DON'T.....HAVE.....THE.....MONEY. Ok, come on say it again, WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY, WEDON'THAVETHEMONEY, HEY, WEDON'THAVETHEMONEY, don't it make you feel good just to say it?? Come on, WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY. Ya got that?? Hey Drew, WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY. So, whatcha gonna do? Make your mind up cause we'll let you sit out this year and next year and the year after that until you won't be worth squat with only 1 or 2 good years left if that, while we find your replacement. Yeah you won't be playing for us, but you won't be playing for anybody else either. It's time to fish or cut bait Drew, SOGOTP time. We'll give you 19.5 for 5 years and that's it. What's it gonna be? You know, we had a team before Drew got here and we'll have one when he's gone. One player does not make a team. I love Drew and what he's done for the Saints and NO but we're at a point with this franchise where we need our leaders to come to fore for their team, their city and their FANS who have shown them more love than ANY OTHER FANS IN FOOTBALL have EVER shown their teams, so step up or step off.

At least I wake up to some decent Saints news for a change! :bng:

I'm not sure I agree about that. i much rather see us get guys that knows the system we gonna run and that can help teach the other guys than go out and sign a bunch of big names to rich contracts that might not even be a good fit with our system.

buckblaster1 03-23-2012 01:16 PM

definitly upgrade from shanle

Larry and I speak often, I trust his word. He was psyched about coming even after the bounties so it doesn't surprise me.

|Mitch| 03-23-2012 02:53 PM

Just noticed, he's only 26...

blackangold 03-23-2012 02:58 PM

Anyone is an upgrade from shanle. Casillas would have done well but he cant stay healthy. We should all be able to agree that Wilson is the present and future at SLB. Signing Chamberlain is great but MLB needs to be addressed, not because of Vilma's performance but rather the FACT he will be suspended for the year.

|Mitch| 03-23-2012 03:05 PM

What have I missed? Goodell hasn't ruled on the players yet, nothing can be considered fact yet...

blackangold 03-23-2012 03:14 PM

With what we have seen thus far you could consider me shocked if he played at all this season. I am not the only person that thinks this, hence the Saints bringing in 3 MLBs during Free agency.

W. Kovacs 03-23-2012 05:22 PM

Chamberlain is signed to a 3-year deal according to Jeff Duncan on Twitter.

I didn't want to say it, but since you brought it up I have to agree. I keep hearing just pay the man, but with what? He can not win games by himself. Others have to be paid also. Just pay him the 24 million a year and let the defense get worse and see what happens.

A little here and a little there......the next thing you know we have a competitive defense.

With our cap situation heading into this season I was sure we'd add one, maybe two good players on defense and have to make do with what we have left.

I'm surprised we've added two high quality starters in Bunkley and Lofton, and an ascending OLB in Chamberlain, and we're only a few weeks into free agency.
