Saints players that could be suspended;impact on the season

With the dramatic and what some are calling harsh suspensions for the New Orleans Saints coaching staff, the worst may be yet to come. Suspensions and possible fines that are coming for players could also hamper the season for the team.

One name that keeps coming up over and over is linebacker Jonathan Vilma. Vilma has been the one player that is clearly named in the investigation and will likely face a lengthy suspension from the NFL.

While some analysts have Vilma as being suspended for up to six games, it wouldn’t be a huge shocker if NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell decided to extend the suspension to eight games or even the whole year.

If that sounds harsh, look at the penalties that were just handed down to head coach Sean Payton, general manager Mickey Loomis, linebacker coach Joe Vitt, and former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

Vilma isn’t alone though in what would be a range of suspensions that could severely decimate the defensive unit of the Saints and also the impact it could have on the season.

So every player on the defense then.....

Unless Goodell has a list of how much each player was paid and for what, it will be extremely difficult for him to punish players like he did coaches & the GM.

Here is a list of the ones I could find, but I am not sure of the credibility of the source. New-Orleans-Saints Salaries | New-Orleans-Saints Player Salaries | 2012 New-Orleans-Saints Salary

Jonathan Vilma 5,400,000
Scott Shanle 1,750,000
Martez Wilson 509,000
Will Herring 1,300,000
Will Smith 825,000
Sedrick Ellis 5,816,000
Junior Galette 490,000
Cameron Jordan 726,427
Tom Johnson 465,000
Malcolm Jenkins 1,092,000
Jabari Greer 5,400,000
Roman Harper 4,500,000
Patrick Robinson 527,500
Isa Abdul-Quddus 465,000

Total cap space = $29,265,927

Thats an awful lot of dough to spend elsewhere.

having two players on the field that suck is better than two great players standing on the sidelines.

just saying

he'd better suspend a lot of them and for the year... we end up getting to the SB its going to be embarrassing for him.

Although the way our Defense played the past 2 years hell suspend them just for that. We may actually have a chance... lol.

Thats the 2012 cap hit if they make the team.

If we cut them, all guaranteed money and signing bonus accellerates to this year...

Harpers cap hit is 4.5 million if he makes the team.
If we cut him, his cap hit is near 17 million.

I'm sure there are several others on that list that would cost more to cut than to keep.

I got the greatest game promotion ever!!!

The first 25 people enter the dome on game day gets to dress out. Of that the lucky first 8 gets to start on D.

Mardigras9 03-26-2012 10:36 AM

Have to make Drew happy, the only way we have a chance is to score big every game.

NOLA54 03-26-2012 01:43 PM

First of all how does Goodell know who put money into the pot? He can't just willy nilly suspend players based on someone elses word. I would think the NFLPA would have something to say about it as would the players to be named would probably file lawsuites. You can't assume guilt based on association or otherwise. There better be some hard evidence of who participated. Unless players confess or someone made recordings of the conversations how does Goodell know who to suspend. Vilma's is the only name I have heard during this whole thing.

saintfan 03-26-2012 06:36 PM

Ima tell y'all what. If I get suspended they better be able to PROVE I took money or I'm getting Jackie on 'da phone...

If I were a betting man I would say that Vilma is out for the year. Harper may be too - he was already being labeled "dirty".

Look for Jenkins to probably get 8 games.

Doesn't matter if they (Harper/Jenkins) did anything wrong, there are enough "vicious hits" out of our safeties on film (called tackles 5-10 years ago) that we're toast.

I also look for former Saints Hargrove and Bobby McCray to get a dose.

That would only free up cap space if they released all those players. If I am not mistaken, while suspended players might not be getting paid, their would be salary still counts towards the cap.

Also, Jonathan Vilma and maybe Roman Harper are the only players on the team I can see getting a significant suspension. So even if they didn't count toward the cap while suspended, it would only save us money on the games they actually miss. So that number you added up would go way down.

Interesting to think about, though.

|Mitch| 03-27-2012 12:27 AM

Actually releasing all these players and we still have to pay them their guaranteed money. So realeasing Harper would cost us something like 17 million

Marlboro Man 03-28-2012 11:57 PM

Well if he suspends all of em we won't be able to field a team, and dumbarse Goodell and the nfl would lose millions.
