Former Viking claims coach taught how to injure quarterbacks

The latest allegation comes from former Vikings defensive lineman Brad Culpepper. who claims that, in the 1990s, the defensive linemen were coached on the finer points of knocking the quarterback out of the game.
“We practiced techniques to injure players,” Culpepper said on Mike Bianchi’s Orlando-based radio show, via Jeremy Fowler of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “We would dive on a mat and aim for the knee portion of a pad like it was the quarterback, and we would practice going at that and trying to bust the quarterback’s knee. You knock the quarterback out, you win the game. . . . If you pull on their arm and land on their shoulder, you can dislocate [the shoulder] and then they’re out. We used to practice that, too.”

just had to post it after all the cry baby crap from the vikes. they trained to do it. in my book this is far worse. were is the nfl on this one?

LOL they did not do that for free... They just didn't receive "extra" for it.

I would love to see a defensive coaches take on a player not hitting an opponent at 100%...

In reality, defensive players can get hurt "throttling back"..... If I try to hit you at 100% my body is tensed up to deliver all it can, if i throttle back to 75% some muscles become relaxed and I take a good bit of the impact.

People are taking this whole situation wrong. SP would not be suspended right now if it was only being caught with the bounty system a second time. The suspension comes from the cover that ensued afterwards.

If you break the rules, confess. If you lie, do the time. No one ever accused these other teams of it, they didn't have a chance to lie about it.

No, were not taking it wrong. Notice how many different layers are coming out about bounties now that we took the fall. And not just bounties, stories like this one, diliberate attempts to injure. It was always there. Always. If your not winning nobody gives a **** about if you injure or even mame. Nobody gives two cents about health and safety if you are losing. This was only investigated because we WON!!! And not just that we won, but we won in abusive fashion, 2 years later NFC Championship game San Fran vs NYG I dare you to go back and look at that game and not draw comparisons to the Championship game the Saints played vs the Vikings. The 49ers destroyed Eli over, and over. I think the announcer said 20 times, guess what 49ers didn't win, you'll never hear bout it again.

It's always going to be there. There were chances given to not be put in this position. The FO, to include SP, were told multiple times to stop the bounty system. They covered it up, played it off, lied about it. If it was just having the bounty system and continuing the use, there would have been fines and no suspension. Instead they lied.

Goodell is not punishing for the bounties, he is punishing for the lying. I still don't understand why no one understands this.

If it comes out that SF has a bounty system, guess what, they will be told to stop. If they don't, they will be fined. If they don't but, arrogantly, try to cover it up and lie about it, they will face the same stuff we are going through now.

Actually, no. The "punishing" is more of a show for the benefit of possible future judges and juries on all of the lawsuits the NFL is facing from former players. Where that not the case (the NFL being sued over health issues), this would've been a non-issue, because the office-pool practice has gone on since forever, and the NFL FO pretty much has to know what has gone on since forever, being there are plenty of ex-players around.

... and speaking of Vikings fans... I got in a lil' discussion with one over at NFL.com (under the comment section of one article); you know, the ones still crying about 2009, and ask him about Jared Allen, a known repeat offender of illegal hits, and if memory serves me correct, was the most fined player in 2009. And I challenged the dude to come up with ANY hit like THE 2 HITS Jared Allen put on Matt Schaub in which the intention was CLEARLY to bust his knees; or find me a picture or video of any Saints player in the same position as Ray Edwards on the SI cover going for Brees' knees.

Wanna see dirty? Wanna see intent to injure?
