It's a developing story on ESPN right now! What do you all think? Should we bring in the Big Tuna?

TheOak 03-26-2012 11:41 AM

Nope.. let Carmichael handle it. Will make for an easier transition back to the norm next season....

Do we really want the drama of will Parcels want to stay next season?

There is no total replacement for Payton.

LBCutta 03-26-2012 11:44 AM

I say do it! I mean Parcells is basically Payton's mentor and brought him up in the league. And they have the same tendencies. I mean it makes perfect sense. I like Carmichael but Im not sure he has the attitude we need in a head coach.

BGWhoDat 03-26-2012 11:47 AM

Meh...

He can't stay and wouldn't want to stay. Payton is still under contract and if he was to do it it would only be for the one year contractually. I'd rather Carmichael stay doing what he is doing and not taking on more.

I think it's a great idea!

Seer1 03-26-2012 11:59 AM

Parcells'll want some $$$ to do it. Give that to Drew instead!

darstep 03-26-2012 12:01 PM

Big Tuna would have the whole locker room in an uproar.
Get upset and cut Colston for babying a sore hamstring.
Tuna likes control and the ability to do whatever he wants. Not what we need.
It would be like letting someone borrow your hanky...Nah, you just keep it.
In my mind it's just temporary; like being out on sick leave.
You don't higher someone to cover sick leave, someone else steps up until they are back.
Carmichael or Spagnuola will do fine, that is, unless Payton's out for good,
then it's a whole new ball game.

WhoDat!656 03-26-2012 12:02 PM

That would mess up ESPN's Power Rankings!!!

ESPN is reporting that Payton approached Parcells, so if Payton thinks it will work, I am all for it!

saints1234 03-26-2012 12:03 PM

i like the idea, it would just be for one year the Big Tuna in the Big Easy its a perfect match for one year

LBCutta 03-26-2012 12:03 PM

Well that little weasel John Clayton said apparently SP talked to his staff this weekend and Pete Carmichael said he wanted to focus on the offense, Vitt is Suspended and Spags is new. So It looks like no one really wants to step up so maybe they need an outsider to come in.

hagan714 03-26-2012 12:03 PM

tuna and crawfish hmmmmm?

boy would the nfl fo flip out over that move.

alleycat_126 03-26-2012 12:04 PM

Sean Payton, Bill Parcells discuss New Orleans Saints job, sources say - ESPN

Eh the one thing we do know about Parcells is he is good in small doses, not large ones like with the cowboys, he would basically not tinker with the offense or defense, just be the figure head!!

jokeray 03-26-2012 12:05 PM

just say no to the big tuna! Dude turns 71 this fall!

See I think Tuna comes in knowing that it is an Interim job so he wont try to control it too much. Maybe just as a temporary overseer that shares the same beliefs and leadership style as SP

SaintsRule11 03-26-2012 12:09 PM

No! Terrible idea! He doesn't know our system. He butts heads with people. And I don't like him. Miami Dolphins ring a bell?

73Saint 03-26-2012 12:09 PM

I think there is still concern that Payton may not have a job at the end of the season. I bet this is him trying to ensure he still has something to come back to.

I know people keep saying no way that SP loses his job over this, but if I am Benson, I want someone steering the ship all the time. And yes I know there is strong leadership in the organization, but there still has to be major concern that day-to-day operations are handled properly.

I guess I am just going to be uneasy until SP is officially back from his year long suspension. Until then, nothing HC-related is going to give me a warm-and-fuzzy feeling.

SaintsRule11 03-26-2012 12:13 PM

Another thing is that Zach Strief said things went very well in Payton's absence last year. We went 9-1 after Sean Payton's injury. I'm not suggesting we are better of without Sean Payton, I'm suggesting we do just fine with the coaches THAT WE HAVE. We do not need an egotistical power-hungry coach coming out of nowhere and screwing up everything we've built. No no no!

Beastmode 03-26-2012 12:18 PM

Carmichael has enough on his plate. Running the offense along with all the additional duties...it's too much. Same goes for Spags. We need someone with a stoic demeanor who commands respect and is a proven leader. And yes, things went well when SP was out but let's not kid ourselves, he was still very much involved in big decesions. Saints needs someone to call those shots just so long as they know they are staying in a rental so no painting the walls or doing any crazy landscaping.

arsaint 03-26-2012 12:19 PM

ONLY if PC is calling plays and Tuna is calling timeouts, replays, etc.

Do we really want to drop that much $$$ for a figurehead???

papz 03-26-2012 12:23 PM

I'm fine with going what we just had. I'm a little reserved on how Parcells influence would handicap our high octane offense... and I'm just not that interested forking out the price tag it would cost.

SmashMouth 03-26-2012 12:33 PM

On the fence on this one.... but if SP deems it could work, why not? There is no denying the "Tuna" would command the respect of the players.

QBREES9 03-26-2012 12:37 PM

There is no replacement for coach Payton !

WhoDat!656 03-26-2012 12:37 PM

NFL Network is reporting that Payton will meet with Parcells later this week

QBREES9 03-26-2012 12:38 PM

Man news is breaking fast

Just like Beastmode already stated, this situation is not comparable to what the Saints went through this past season with SP's injury - he was still heavily involved in game planning and play calling.

I think it's a great idea!

I think Carmichael would be a continuation of what the team already knows and, a year of Parcells could damage the Saints philosophy more than help.... then there would need to be a transition back to Payton...

Also we do not know what sort of a bond would be between Brees and Parcells...

"If it aint broke....dont fix it"

QBREES9 03-26-2012 12:42 PM

I have question. Do we think the NFL WILL LET THIS HAPPEN. Only because of the relationship between coach Payton and Parcells.

saintfan 03-26-2012 12:43 PM

I think I like it more than I don't. Anybody who's working his ass off isn't going to have any trouble with Parcells. Let Spags run his D. Let Pete run the O, and let Bill guide the ship. The NFL would be powerless to stop it.

I'm for it if for no other reason than it would probably piss off Goodell, and I'm for anything that screws with Roger's little pea brain.

They can not stop it.

buckblaster1 03-26-2012 12:51 PM

parcells aint hunting a long term coaching job . he would do this as a favor to payton and it would be a pr thing. plus payton would be more comfortable with parcells there then some other coach because he knows parcells aint wanting a long term job. it would be kinda like , here hold my chair till i get back

SaintPauly 03-26-2012 12:58 PM

I remember someone mentioning John Gruden. Gruden is a control freak as well! We all know, some head coaches, were better off as coordinators, and some coordinators, are better off as head coaches. I don't think it's a good idea to throw Carmichael, who has NEVER been a head coach, in the driver's seat, in the middle of all this controversy. The controversy is the problem right now, whether you want to believe it or not. Parcell's can handle that. All the questions, the press is going to throw at him, over the bounty issues. Parcell's is the perfect choice, for what we are going to have to deal with this upcoming season. I like this idea, and support it fully. Payton comes back in 2013, and we don't skip a beat.

pinch 03-26-2012 01:02 PM

How is this even up to Payton? Doesn't the owner and/or GM choose the head coach?

Luda34 03-26-2012 01:11 PM

I don't like it why don't we stay in house

GeauxForMore 03-26-2012 01:19 PM

If he doesnt mess with our O and just be a figure head that will be fine

RaginCajun83 03-26-2012 01:20 PM

I'm on the fence here cause PC had a chance to run the ship last season and fine to me but man the local media wouldn't know what hit them after games with Parcells

TheOak 03-26-2012 01:25 PM

Here are my thoughts on it.... besides my opinion on just a coach for the year..

I would have not gone public with this at all at this point. Goodell wants to punish the Saints as seen by suspending Payton... If we fill the slot with a SB winning coach would that negate Paytons suspension for the most part and cause him to be heavier handed on the players punishment?

I would have kept quiet and visited Bill, then let Loomis finish the deal after player penalties have been given out.

Conspiracy theory I know... but..

NOLA54 03-26-2012 01:28 PM

I like the idea. Can you imagine how it would blow all of those haters out there out of the water! I think Parcels would be on the same page as Sean.

Danno 03-26-2012 01:31 PM

I'm all for it.

Best non-player news I've heard in weeks.

TheOak 03-26-2012 01:33 PM

ok

Leadership

Let's face the facts...
  1. The Saints organization is in disarray right now, as would any NFL organization having to deal with the loss of a headcoach and GM for all and most of a season.
  2. If Carmichael was the "absolute" replacement for Sean Payton, the Saints would have announced it.
  3. If Carmichael steps up as head coach and is marginally successful, the Saints will lose him next season in the Coaching carousel of the NFL.
  4. Carmichael is the offensive coordinator and since he's never been a head coach, we all know it's going to be hard for him to fill both shoes.
  5. Any possible replacement must be willing to accept a possible temporary situation.
  6. That leaves retired coaches that could help manage the clock and team during games.
  7. Tuna is Sean Payton's mentor and friend, he's retired and knows SP's system because it's based off the system Tuna himself develop.

I'm pretty sure the Saints are in uncharted waters with the full season suspension, but honestly this is probably the best case scenario for the organization. It could possibly open the door for Tuna to take on a VP roll with the Saints if/when Sean Payton returns.
