Rooney Rule has limited appilication to Saints

Several of you have asked whether the Saints will be required to comply with the Rooney Rule in replacing coach Sean Payton for the 2012 season.

The answer is: Maybe.

Per a source with knowledge of the procedures, the Saints wonít be required to comply with the Rooney Rule if they stay within the organization to find a replacement for Payton. If, alternatively, the Saints make an outside hire for 2012, the Saints will be required to interview in person at least one minority candidate.

For now, it appears that the Saints will stay in-house, elevating offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr., offensive line coach Aaron Kromer, or defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo (pictured).

Paytonís one-season suspension becomes effective April 1.

Does the Rooney rule apply to hiring an INTERIM head coach?

WhoDat!656 03-27-2012 04:08 PM

I don't think interim has anything to do with it

If the Saints hire a coach from within the organization, they don't HAVE to interview a minority coach.

If the Saints want to hire someone outside the organization, Parcells, Cowher, gruden, etc. they HAVE to interview a minority coach.

Actually, from what I have read of the actual rule, the internal coach has to have contract language that guarantees them a spot if there is an opening in order to get around it. It's possible that all of our coaches have that language, which would mean that they will have to all turn down the position before we can attempt to hire Parcells. but I suspect it's just Vitt, Carmichael and Spags who would have that kind of clause, and probably in that order.

it's not a real rule anyway...
so we interview Dennis Green just like everyone else and hire who we want

or Art Shell.

But like Florio points out, why would they bother to come in for an interview when they know Parcells already has the job?

I say we hire The Big Tuna and turn him loose on Goodell.

Europeans don't count as minorities unless they are from Spain :)
