what did Payton lie about?

what did payton supposedly lie about? i kept hearing he lied about somehting but no one has said what is was.

The NFL asked Payton back in 2010 if he knew anything about the bounties when they first told the Saints to stop it. Payton said he didn't know anything about them and supposedly tried to cover it all up. As did Loomis, Vitt, and Williams

All I ever got from reading the stuff was that Goodell wasn't satisfied that Sean did enough to stop the program.

ChrisXVI 03-31-2012 02:23 PM

C'mon man... enough. Sean lied his ass off for a long time and denied the bounty program. Then he admitted that he lied.

I don't think so. I think he admitted to being ultimately responsible.

Better get you some manners, bud. You'll go the way of Canton.

Alaska

I don't think that Payton ever admitted to lying; Goodell supposedly found evidence in all the paperwork that linked Payton to the bounties.

Payton taking responsibility as the head coach is not the same thing as admitting to lying

ChrisXVI 03-31-2012 04:15 PM

You're splitting hairs here guys. He said they would end the bounty program and they didn't. Then he admitted that to Goodell. Hasn't it already been made pretty clear that Payton and Loomis lied to Benson. Let it go.

The hell we are. Find me a quote where Sean admits it to Goodell. I apologize in advance if you can find it, but I haven't seen that.

Now, I've read a lot of writers saying as much, but that's hardly proof that Sean lied to Goodell. Greg Williams lied and acknowledged it. Vitt did too. I've yet to read anything of the sort related to Sean.

According to the leagues report, Goodell is hacked off at Sean for making "a cursory attempt" to stop it. To me, that means Roger doesn't think Sean did enough. Please let me know if you have more information.

Speedy Ron 03-31-2012 09:18 PM

exactly what i thought...no one knows if he lied for a fact. all i knew was that he didnt do enough to stop it

st thomas 03-31-2012 09:54 PM

payton did not lie evidently, he is appealing if that means anything. is he going to admit he lied now ? for a lighter sentence, ala pete rose saga

Which just makes the whole thing more maddening because we are being told the severity of the punishment is because he 'lied' and 'covered it up', but I haven't found anything that he did either, only that in Roger's opinion he didn't do enough. :brood:

RaginCajun83 03-31-2012 11:22 PM

Goddell is the one that's lying, sure Payton might have covered the bounty thing up but every time Goddell opens his mouth about player safety he's lying through his teeth, if he cared so much about player safety why does he push an 18 game season every chance he gets ..... he's in it for the all mighty dollar and to cover his rear in the PR nightmare that's coming when the 500 plus ex players sue the NFL

The Dude 04-01-2012 12:11 AM

First of all how in the hell do you have 50k pages about the bounty program. Seriously that seems ridiculous. They must have been texting like little school girls.

|Mitch| 04-01-2012 12:30 AM

the 50K pages were the teams total e-mail correspondence for the time, I speculate 10% or less of that 50K had anything to do with bounties...

Right - but the media keeps saying over and over there are 50 thousand 'pages of evidence'. It is understanding that people would think all this crazy stuff because the media representation has been such crap.

Marlboro Man 04-01-2012 12:29 PM

Us serfs don't need to know. Comrade Goodell said he did and that's all we need to know. Zieg Hiel, comrade Goodell.

QBREES9 04-01-2012 02:40 PM

You just can't lie. Ask Mike Vick how that worked out for him.

Way less. WAY less than 10% had anything to do with bounties. The league is talking about 1 or 2 emails and 2 or 3 power point slides out of the 50K pages of documents that they looked at. Specifically the one email from Ornstein before the Packers game, and 2 or 3 power point slides from team meetings that referenced the "cart offs" or "bring out the John Deere" or whatever it was. All of which could easily have been tongue in cheek, or skating the line.

Of course they say it was 50K pages of "evidence" and that "forensic experts" were consulted, to make their case sound more solid or more extensive than it really is.

I've got to admit that Chris makes what could be a valid point and most likely is. It was probably an escalation of one little white lie to cover another little white lie. Now, has it been blown out of proportion? Heck yes. Did Sean Payton flat out lie to the commissioner? I don't doubt it. After reading his book it's apparent that he has an ego and pushes the envelop......some would even consider him arrogant.
Personally, I love him and have some of the same tendencies.
He was aware without a doubt. This belongs squarely on Gregg Williams shoulders. Payton didn't throw his players and coaches under the bus when this came back up. The facts will come out.

TheOak 04-03-2012 04:10 PM

Well....
Since Sean Payton still has no clue about what evidence the NFL has on this, I find it difficult for Goodell to pose a direct question regarding what evidence the NFL has found in order to lie about it.

Thats my story and i am sticking to it.
