It's all the old players who didn't prepare for the future and played with inferior gear and the fear of lawsuits that drives this now. I personally believe leading with the helmet is dangerous to both parties. It's a "relatively" new practice over the last decade or so it seems to me.
If the Saints had then stopped this talk, I still think the Saints would have had punishments. There is, was a papertrail, audio. A still unknown rat.

Saints, from founding day in the late 1960's to about 2007 , right, NFL and no other teams took notice. When you are at the top of the heap, you get noticed.
NFL and Who Dat shirts, how ridiculous was that?
Saints before had fleeting moments of some spark and excitment during Morten Anderson days winning with those fieldgoals. The Dome Patrol lead by Rickey Jackson. Now, that was a real defense. We had no offense.

These current Saints under Coach SP have been consistent as a a contender and got to the big prize and won that one. Two years at NFC Champs 'game. Playoffs. Deep in the Playoffs. You get noticed and that is life. Who wants to knock down a small fry.

Goodell's panites are in a bunch over all of the lawsuits coming the league's way from former players. Therefore he is trying to make the case that he is working to make safety a priority so when they are in front of a judge they can say they are taking action & then site the discipline issued against the Saints (scape goats).

Next thing to "level the field" will be to make the slowest 40 time the standard. Any player that runs faster will be handicapped. All WR will run the same speed, all DB's will be able to cover them and so on. Imagine all the 3 - 0 final scores we'll be able to snooze our way through!!!
