Suspensions upheld, No change to ruling by Goodell

1 Attachment(s)
The NFL upheld its discipline in the New Orleans Saints bounty case, meaning head coach Sean Payton will begin his year-long suspension April 16.

The league announced the penalties Monday, noting that the bans for general manager Mickey Loomis (eight games) and assistant coach Joe Vitt (six games) stand and will begin after the preseason.

"The club and the individuals will be expected to cooperate in any further proceedings and to assist in the development and implementation of programs to instruct players and coaches at all levels on principles of player safety, fair play, and sportsmanship," the league said in a statement. "If they embrace the opportunity and participate in a constructive way, Commissioner Goodell said he would consider mitigating the financial penalties on the individuals. In the case of the team, the commissioner would consider whether there are factors that would support modifying the forfeiture of the team's 2013 second-round draft choice."

Payton, Loomis and Vitt had an appeal hearing with the league on Thursday.

So, the same for now, with time off for good behavior.
If Ben R. is the precident, we could still see Payton this year.

TheEnigma 04-09-2012 12:23 PM

I'm sure most of us expected this. Bring on Parcells!

ScottF 04-09-2012 12:25 PM

scratch that-- I just re-read and read that god might reconsider the FINANCIAL penalties

SO, there is hope for getting the draft pick back, if the parties involved use their off time to do a little bit of brown-nosing!

MistaBigXXL 04-09-2012 12:26 PM

No surprises here. Payton just bought himself a little extra time and possibly saved Benson some money.

Halo 04-09-2012 12:31 PM

so we will get the draft picks back (probably) and get Tuna this season?

|Mitch| 04-09-2012 12:33 PM

Did anyone expect Goodell would show any mercy?

Careful consideration = flipping a two headed coin.

LBCutta 04-09-2012 12:39 PM

They knew that ***** Goodell wasn't going to budge. Payton just wanted to buy some time.

SaintsBro 04-09-2012 12:41 PM

There was also supposed to be some discussion of clarifying what exactly Payton can and cant do, during his suspension, which hopefully has been addressed (legally and rule-wise) as well.

saintfan 04-09-2012 12:51 PM

Sean is still out nearly 8 MILLION dollars for this?

Oh people...OH PEOPLE...If I'm Sean I am furious right now. Not that, as Sean, I would have 'expected' Goodell to do much. Still, I'm on the phone with legal people and so help me GOD if there's any opportunity, slight as it may be...loopholes included...precedence-setting legal action...WHATEVER, I'm at least exploring it. Hell, the damn TEAM looses half a mil and "I" loose nearly EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS?

Not without a great big mother-****ing fight if I'm Sean.

QBREES9 04-09-2012 12:52 PM

This is not a shock at all. When someone tells you to STOP doing what your doing. You should STOP. Plus don't Lie see what it will get you.

SmashMouth 04-09-2012 12:52 PM

It's still Guck Foodell!

In all the 'evidence' the media has been tossing around it is quite possible that I missed it...

But I still haven't seen or heard any evidence whatsoever that Sean lied to anybody. I know captain evidence shredder himself has SAID it, but that's it and I'm sorry for me that isn't nearly enough.

RockyMountainSaint 04-09-2012 12:58 PM

He might reconsider financial penalties?

Does this mean that Benson will be given the choice to pay employees that aren't going to do any work for him?

Oh wise, benevolent Great Leader! What a worker's utopia you have created!

Yeah, it was my understanding that this was the whole reason for SP appealing.

Think there was an email to Payton supposedly...all included in their extensive thousand pages report.

Either way, I'll put money down that Goodell lightens the Payton suspension midseason....almost like he has a history of it...

Brandon428 04-09-2012 01:11 PM

Yeah,I think we all agree that we didn’t think the appeal was gonna change anything rather just buy Payton a little more time to tie up some loose ends.

I say we go after Parcells right now so he has ample time to adjust and settle in!

MistaBigXXL 04-09-2012 01:19 PM

I think we have to sign Brees this week. I don't want him missing any of the training camp.

Brandon428 04-09-2012 01:23 PM

Yeah,I think its time to sign Brees also.

LivnaLieTimay 04-09-2012 01:41 PM

No surprise with the ruling today. Glad a decision is made and we can start moving on to a coaching decision. If anything, I'm surprised Goodell left open the possibility of reducing some of the penalties towards the team like giving us draft picks back.

I think now is the time the team needs to heat up talks with Drew. Offseason workouts start in a week and we're going to need Drew to be at these workouts leading the team with Payton gone.

I also think Parcells is the right move to take over for Payton. He is a strong coach who can handle the responsibilities that are going to come with coaching this team. Lets make both these moves happen this week!

neugey 04-09-2012 02:09 PM

The spirit of Easter sure had an impact on Goodell *sarcasm*

Expecting mercy from Goodell makes as much sense as going to a whore for a hug!

I believe that any hint that Godell might ease up gives me a little more hope.:???:
Now go sign Drew.

Goodell only reduces penalties for NFL employees who sexually assault young women...not for being physical in a physical game with grown men on both sides of the ball making large dollars...if SP had raped some poor defensless women, he would be "free" in 8 weeks like big ben...but he commited the biggest SIN of all...lying to the commish(comrad goodell)

Actually....when someone discovers you doing something deemed illegal they hold a hearing and punish the guilty individuals. The fact the league covered it up and did nothing makes them as guilty as us. In fact there are many proven guilty individuals in this not being punished. Between this and every other instance where Goodell has acted he is proving himself a complete joke.

The problem is ... unlike the other cases, what constitutes "good behavior" for Sean Payton? Does Sean need to apologize further in media? Run free clinics on the dangers of the bounty system in the NFL and its communities? Help kids in college football? Stay away from college football? Attend sensitivity training alongside Gregg Williams? Write "I will not lie" 100,000 times on a whiteboard? Does Roger want Sean to move to Siberia for a year?

The fact is no one, probably not even Goodell, knows what constitutes good behavior. In contrast, all Big Ben had to do was keep it in his pants and keep his motorcycle upright for a few months to get his suspension reduced.

gandhi1007 04-10-2012 10:07 PM

The difference is Big Ben played for Pittsburgh.........one of Goodell's "Golden Teams". If you don't think this douche hates New Orleans, just look at our schedules since he took over......at Chicago, Minnesota, & New York in the dead of Winter, season opener at Green Bay, etc, etc.... Whoever from New Orleans banged his boyfriend, please call Roger & apologize (even if you don't mean it). It could only help when dealing with this *****.

Agree 100% that this is why the axe came down but keep in mind so did Vick and he was released on good behavior....both figuratively and literally....
