No Parcells

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Bill Parcells will not come out of retirement to serve as the Saints' interim head coach during Sean Payton's one-year suspension.

I guess that means Carmichael for the first 6 games and Vitt from there to the end

NuNu318 04-10-2012 09:20 AM

Oh well. I think that it will be a little less of a media circus with no Parcells. I was for him coming aboard but also cautious. Chemistry is everything with this team...even tho he would be a figure head so to speak he has a dominating personality to say the least. How would his personality work with the personality of the Saints most prized possesion, Brees? SP has a strong personality as well but he's also very receptive to Brees input. I don't know if Brees and Parcells really would have meshed well.

Beastmode 04-10-2012 09:32 AM

This is not good. We need someone to take care of the media, keep the peace b/t coaches, and keep the players in line. Do you guys think Carmichael is ready for all this additional responsibility? It just seems like way too much on one plate. I hope the hunt is still on...

Supertek 04-10-2012 09:36 AM

Maybe this guy is wrong. I hope so.

CharityMike 04-10-2012 09:42 AM

This is probably for the best. I have utmost confidence that Carmichael can get it done. He handled himself very well last year in Paytons absence. Really it's a no brainer. Who else knows the offense and Brees tendency better than Carmichael?

WhoDat!656 04-10-2012 09:55 AM

I only was interested in signing Parcells because Payton wanted him.

SaintsBro 04-10-2012 10:02 AM

I'll believe it when I hear it from the Saints officially or someone else is announced. But I think a lot of it on the golf course etc. was exactly what Payton sincerely said it was, to introduce Loomis to Parcells and to talk about what Payton and the team should do next, and also to just sort of throw a handful of dirt from a Palm Beach sandtrap right in the league's face, during the owners' meetings.

ScottF 04-10-2012 10:02 AM

I agree that this helps keep us below the radar and focussed. Say no to 'Hard Knocks' also. Let's try to return to normalcy

Difference is that Payton was still at the games, just not on the sidelines.

LBCutta 04-10-2012 10:23 AM

I liked the idea but I think in the end this is for the best. Just get Payton and the coaching staff burn phones and call it a day...lol

Beastmode 04-10-2012 10:33 AM

I hope you guys are right. My reasoning is that Payton would not have asked if he didn't think it was needed and as fans, we have seldom questioned any move he has made over the years.

dueceloose 04-10-2012 10:40 AM

This can either be seen as good or bad. Bad because it'll put additional priorities on our in house coaches or good that we wont have the extra press that Parcells will bring but i'll wait to hear if this is official on espn.

Completely agree. Parcells walking into press conferences after games would have immediately gotten the room in control. Carmichael, Vitt, even Spagnuolo probably won't have that level of gravitas.

The big question now (for me) is: what is the mood of the coaches? How does the guy that does wind up moving into the role feel, knowing that he wasn't the first choice? How do any of them feel knowing that Payton, Loomis, etc. felt they needed to go out of the organization?

I just have a bad feeling that this wasn't handled well and could have made things worse rather than better...

Danno 04-10-2012 11:06 AM

It'll probably be a coach by committee.

Vitt is head coach during pre-season so everyone see's how it goes every week, and we'll prepare the exxact same way every week without Vitt.

Vitt's not a bad choice because he's been here forever and it allows Spagnoulo to concentrate on putting a new defense together. Vitt will provide continuity and consistency throughout the preseason.

When game 1 arrives, I wouldn't be surprised if Spagnoulo takes over as the interim-interim.
1. He's done it for 3 years already.
2. His defense should already be installed.
3. He'll be familiar with our routine since he'll have gone thru it for FIVE preseason games (thank you NFL).
4. The other coaches will all be familiar with him by that time as well.

It probably doesn't matter since someone is just keeping the seat warm until Vitt returns, who's just keeping that seat warm until Payton returns in 2013.

QBREES9 04-10-2012 11:13 AM

Pete Carmichael ! he can do it.

Does anybody besides me think that maybe, just maybe, there is a chance the Saints ASKED for that fifth preseason game, or that the league offered/gave it to them, because someone KNEW that the ***** was going to hit the fan with the bounty investigation, which was coming down the pike, and wanted to give the Saints more of a chance to get their act together, before the season started? Because it's pretty obvious that the preseason schedule was being made at the exact same time that the penalties were being decided internally, before they were released. Just sayin'. I think it's really good that we have that extra preseason game on the schedule, right about now.

Brandon428 04-10-2012 11:23 AM

I still think everything is still up in the air. I think Parcells is still a strong possibility. If not him I think they’ll take a look at a few other options out there besides someone in house.

SaintsBro 04-10-2012 11:42 AM

Well Joe Vitt was 4-7 as interim coach of the Rams, and Carmichael was either 1-1 or 1-2 as interim coach of the Saints last year (depending on whether you count the Buccaneers game or not). I'll tell you what, I don't like this one bit. My gut tells me they really need to look at someone else, or we easily could be looking at 5-11 or 4-12 or worse... Better give Gruden a call, LOL.

I can't stand that guy. All that sneering for attention...

I'll bet that O-line coach Kromer takes the role of head coach until Vitt takes over after his suspension. That way Carmichael and Brees can focus on the offense and Spagn... Spags can focus on the defense.

By the way, Vitt doesn't make me comfortable as HC. He was underwhelming when he had HC duties in NO and St.Louis.

Rugby Saint II 04-10-2012 11:58 AM

We are hampered not hamstrung.

LivnaLieTimay 04-10-2012 12:32 PM

I hope some of you guys are right, but I think this isn't good for the Saints. Now, either Carmichael or Spags is going to be missing out on time focusing on their job as coordinator. Then after 6 weeks we're stuck with Joe Vitt. As a fan looking at it from the outside, every time I hear Joe Vitt's name it's something negative; 'Bountygate', Vicodin, 4-7 record as interim head coach. Not exactly a guy who has me excited about leading our team.

The Saints are definitely rolling the dice with this decision. They are essentially saying they don't need an authority figure (which is what Parcells would of been) to lead this team. This puts a lot of accountability on the players. Now, more than ever it is extremely important that we get Drew locked up to long term deal.

Well that was 7 years ago, and that Ram team finished 6-10.

Not really relevant to 2012.

Of course it is. It's on his resume.
I'm with Timay:

I thought Vitt was the acting HC while SP was hampered by his injury, and Carmichael was just taking over play calling duties as the main offensive coordinator in SP's absence?

I'd personally be much more comfortable with either Kromer or Spags than Carmichael as the acting HC until Vitt has served his suspension.

And Bill Belicheat was a failure in Cleveland.
Hows that resume look now?

CheramieIII 04-10-2012 06:45 PM

The Defense will be fine to Spags and the Offense with Drew
