Joe Vitt's assignment as interim coach sends strong and wrong message from the Saints

By resisting the compulsion to make Bill Parcells an offer he couldn't refuse, and staying in-house to fill the void caused by head coach Sean Payton's season-long suspension, the New Orleans Saints told the football world they're fully capable of handling the bounty scandal without outside intervention.

Joe Vitt is replacing Sean Payton on an interim basis. (US Presswire) That's an admirable sentiment that will play well with the base, but Joe Vitt's appointment as interim head coach also made a pair of troubling, perplexing statements. First, that the Crescent City will be chaos central for the next nine months. Second, that not only will no one responsible for the franchise's predicament be punished internally, but one culpable coach – Vitt – is actually being rewarded.

Translation: We're in a state of confusion, and that's the way we like it down in Louisiana. Take THAT, Roger Goodell.

If Saints owner Tom Benson was looking to send the rest of the league a message that the chastened franchise had a sincere desire to repent and decontaminate, he'd have done anything other than tab Vitt, the team's linebackers coach/assistant head coach, to fill in for Payton.

Put it this way: In terms of improving the team's current image, even Bobby Petrino would have been a cleaner choice.

No, it doesn't.

Petrino quit on the Falcons....

Seer1 04-13-2012 05:30 PM

Who asked them anyhow? Did you ask them? I know I didn't...

Ava's Daddy 04-13-2012 06:40 PM

There's a place I think this guy can stick his article... And I think it goes without saying where exactly that might be...

CheramieIII 04-13-2012 06:51 PM

sends the right message to the people that count. Stay with what brought you until it don't work no mo.

ScottF 04-13-2012 06:55 PM

when we hoist the lombardi trophy in our own building that will be the ultimate f-rodger

RaginCajun83 04-13-2012 07:51 PM

The message it sends is that Roger and the NFL can kiss our black and gold ***

If we stop reading them and stop watching them, their ratings will go down & eventually they'll get fired, so stop. I did.

pherein 04-14-2012 05:55 PM

This has to be the dumbest article I read today. How does doing your best to find a coach to field a good football team have anything to do with sending a message?
Its hilarious what the media will print, and the asinine connections they make up, just to keep the Saints story in the limelight.

Me too!

My thoughts are that we should have went outside and got a man in here even if most dont agree with me. We needed a stable base all year and not bounce back and forth. There needs to be a man in charge no questions asked I think this was a bad decision and will hurt more than the punishments themseves. I so much want to see the team succeed this year after what has happened and this wont help the cause at all. Maybe they will have a change of heart down the road.

I like the decision of promoting Vitt for the year. Stability is the key here and losing Vitt for the first 6 games doesn't really matter because it's all still "Payton's system" and all the coaches have been here since '06 save for Spagnuolo.

Bringing in Parcells or anyone else and they would want to do it "their" way...

Danno 04-15-2012 10:15 AM

The downside to an outsider is just that. He's an outsider than everyone knows will be gone at season's end. I don't know how that commands the type of authority necessary to keep players in line.

An insider will be here at seasons end, and I think the players know and respect Vitt, Kromer, and Carmichael enough to stay focused on their responsibilities.

If Harbaugh can take over a program with all new coaches, a new system, without an off-season to install it all, and make it to the NFC Championship game then this team can surely go all the way without question.

I agree with Danno plus I think Benson is sending a message to the league and media ... "WE ARE WHO DAT FAMILY" ... We will stand behind our coaches and players and we will move on ... like it don't like it is our business! We have more continuity by responding from within the system and coaching cadre that has been in place since 2006 that bring in anybody to include Parcell's. :bng:

Every person has a right to express an opinion.

We all have the right to mercilessly deride that opinion.

Sadly, this person's opinion is hardly worth the effort, it is so poorly devised and constructed.

Maybe he's sending a signal to his employer that his ability to think abstractly is defunct?

Has anyone considered the possibility that an outsider would add more confusion and command less respect with everyone knowing that his tenure would be limited and subject to the "what would Payton do?" second guessing?

An outsider would be in a unique and guaranteed position to fail. Who wants that? Obviously, our mentally compromised author.

Euphoria 04-15-2012 10:45 AM

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Boutte 04-15-2012 01:17 PM

I love this kind of stuff. These idiots are doing more to motivate the team than any bounty ever could.

Like others have said how is bringing some one who doesn't know our players or coaches or just how things are done going to provide stability?

Petrino Petrino Petrino Petrino Petrino Petrino Petrino Petrino, REALLY !

This. :bng:

SloMotion 04-16-2012 07:38 AM

WTF? That has to be the most twisted, bizarre, out-in-left-field viewpoint of the whole situation I've seen yet ... and I've been keeping up, :).

Budsdrinker 04-16-2012 07:45 AM

There wasn't any other NFL news to write about so that had to make up something. Total crap. How do you hire someone outside your current staff for only 1 year especially when you have to satisfy the stupid Rooney rule. The media just can't let this bounty crap die!
