if the NFL knew this was taking place since the 2009 season, why did they take three years to collect knowledge? You would think at the first legit proof this system existed, you would have ended right there if you cared so much about player safety wouldn’t you? Furthermore, if it took three years of collecting evidence against a team – how much of the evidence you have is actually credible?

What this all boils down to is money and trying to create an image that isn’t there. Nearly 1,200 former players have filed concussion related lawsuits against the NFL.....

he NFL investigation only mentioned four players who were actually bounty targets. Those players were quarterback Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, Brett Favre of the Minnesota Vikings, and finally Kurt Warner of the Arizona Cardinals.

Out of those four players only one of them were actually knocked out of the game for a series and that was Warner in the 2009 NFC Divisional Playoffs. This hit was a legal hit in which Warner was laid-out by former-defensive end Bobby McCray on a block following Will Smith’s interception. There was no flag thrown on the play.

So, surely it wasn’t much of a bounty system if there was only four targets named.

Good article

Absolutely terrific article. Very well researched and articulated. It's the exact same points that I've tried to make to ignorant dumba$$ people for a while. Unfortunately, I can't help but feel like no argument is going to matter... Goodell is out for blood and he's hell-bent on getting it.

Nice article with some fresh perspectives, but like everyone else that has covered this issue, the writer focuses on the overly-harsh and historic nature of the suspensions, but completely fails to discuss how Goodell's true colors, vindictiveness and lack of appreciation for Saints fans are displayed by the docked draft choices. Shouldn't the punishment fit the crime?? If so, what do draft choices have to do with bounties (even if they did exist)????

Williams set this up: he’s suspended. Payton, Loomis, Vitt let it go on and lied: suspended. Why should the Commissioner hurt the on-field future of the team for past actions when he’s already penalized…very harshly…those who did the dirty deeds? There’s at least 35 other players on that team that weren’t involved, so why penalize them…or the fans (who still have to pay full price for their tickets) by taking away draft picks and potentially hurting the team’s future performance? Affecting the competitive balance of the league is WAY BEYOND what a Commissioner should be able to do.

It’s like a high school suspending your kid for bad behavior and trying to garnish the parent’s future wages.

Should a Commissioner have the right to affect a team’s future performance for past actions AFTER he’s already penalized those responsible? Doesn’t it reflect that his motives go beyond punishing those responsible and toward ensuring the team is not as successful moving forward? And isn’t that a rather dangerous precedent??

That's sort of what I tried to get it. The calls the NFL thought were dirty, late hits, helmet to helmet, etc.. they were reviewed when the game happened and fined appropriately. That's their job. The NFL has no right now further fine a player, or punish them again - due to finding out about a system. Unless they can approve exchange of cash for injury, which I doubt they can do.

I'm glad you all liked it.
