New Orleans Saints need more players to help with salary cap number

**Update-The Saints current cap space after re-structuring Vilma & Greer is $4.7 million**

So far the New Orleans Saints have been fortunate to make necessary moves in free agency due to players restructuring or extending their contracts. They’ll need more to do the same in order to complete the roster.

In fact, the Saints will actually benefit from making a few more deals in free agency such as find a suitable backup at the cornerback position. Right now second-year player Johnny Patrick is the only one at left and right cornerback.

And let’s not forget the elephant in the room which is quarterback Drew Brees. Brees and the Saints still need to come to terms on a multi-year contract for the franchise player which will likely be at least $110-$115 million total.

On Friday, cornerback Jabari Greer signed a contract extension and linebacker Jonathan Vilma restructured his contract, both of which helped the salary cap situation.

According to Scout.com’s Aaron Wilson, the Saints salary cap space available was at $1.656 million on Saturday. It was unclear if this had the updated contract information on Friday added in or not.

Regardless, that isn’t much more room to work with and the Saints would do well to ask other players to either sign a cap friendly contract extension or restructure their existing contract to help out.

Its my understanding that his cap hit as a franchised QB is larger than what it would be if we signed him long term.

We could save some more cap room by signing Drew long term.

I think Drew's agent is trying to get more money because of the allegations that are being made against the team.

I could be wrong, and probably am, but that is my .02 on the situation!

Even when we get Brees signed, the Saints are still going to have a long, hard season ahead of them.

I hope after we sign Brees we don't get like the Colts got to be, a one trick pony. That pony is in Denver now. We might have to cut some good players because of the cap.

Actually that number is old....

NFC South salary-cap update - NFC South Blog - ESPN

"I just got a look at the updated salary-cap space for all four NFL teams.

It was current as of Monday night. It’s still current for Atlanta, even though cornerback Brent Grimes just signed his tender as the franchise player. Grimes’ tender already was counting against Atlanta’s cap.

With $1.7 million available, the Falcons have the least cap room of any NFC South team.

The New Orleans Saints are next at $4.7 million and that includes Jonathan Vilma's restructured contract and Jabari Greer's three-year contract extension.

Carolina is next at $5.8 million and that figure factors in the recent extension signed by receiver Steve Smith.

Tampa Bay is $16.9 million under the cap. Only five teams currently have more cap room than the Buccaneers."
