Saints’ first pick in third round

1 Attachment(s)
In the six drafts since Sean Payton became the head coach of the New Orleans Saints in 2006, the organization has made a living mining mid- to late-round talent.

If they didn’t contribute immediately, many of them eventually grew into prominent roles with time and proper nurturing in Payton’s system.

All-Pro guards Jahri Evans and Carl Nicks, who’s now with the Tampa Bay Bucs, came to the Saints in the fourth and fifth rounds, respectively, while tackle Jermon Bushrod was a fourth-rounder who became a Pro Bowler this past season.

And starting right tackle Zach Strief and star wide receiver Marques Colston were seventh-round selections — as low as you can go in the draft — taken with the 210th and 252nd overall picks, respectively.

More than ever this year, the Saints will have to rely on trying to come up with the players who slip through the cracks when the three-day NFL draft starts Thursday night.

Actually, it’s a two-day draft for the Saints.

Barring a trade up, which General Manager Mickey Loomis said last week was unlikely, the Saints won’t go on the clock until the third round with the 89th overall selection — about 27 hours after the draft begins.

I think we should draft Roger Goodell...and promptly cut him...

I don't know about that. Give him the football and he'll walk into the end zone untouched every time. It's probably in the rule book somewhere... if not he'll just make one up. He'd easily go #1 overall.

The 5th and 6th round choices are relatively close together. We do have very good success with later round draft picks and hopefully we will continue. I think Reprish is doing a fine job of college scouting. We get two picks close together. So the talent level may return two good prospects.

no we didn't; we traded our first last year for Mark Ingram, Roger only took 2 #2's and we might get next years back...

What's the comparison between Richardson and Ingram? Why was TR desired so high in the draft and Ingram still there at 28 last year?
Is TR that much better than Heisman winner Ingram? Did the Browns reach? Were the Saints fortunate that Ingram was there?
Do we need a new thread for these questions?

TR and Ingram look very similar to me. Both ran a low 40 of 4.47 so the speed is about equal. Ingram looks to have more short area burst while TR has the top end speed, but both are close. Just based on watching every game they ever played in, I'd give Richardson an A, and Ingram an A-minus. Richardson looks to have a bit better vision, but thats close as well.

Why one went 3rd and the other 28th I can't explain. Ingram was mocked by most experts at around pick 15 so he certainly slipped.

Upshaw slipping really surprised me. I know he's a bit of a tweener but I still expected mid-first.

TR >>>>> Ingram

Big home run hitting complete 3 down franchise back. Barring injury, TR will be a monster in this league for a long time. Even when Ingram won the Heisman, I felt Richardson was the best and most talented back on the team.

Not a knock on Ingram... that's just how much I think of Richardson.

You also have to take into account what team needs are as well. Brown felt he was the guy. Ingram slipped perhaps those teams didn't feel he was the guy. Heck we passed on him even.

I'd say TR > Ingram ( I wouldn't go 5 >'s though, maybe 2 >'s):)

I'm expecting him to perform similarly to Steven Jackson and maybe just a hair below Adrian Peterson.

I know that Ingram has great balance. That Sports Science piece on him was really impressive.

Alright, threadjack discontinued.

I'm hoping for a "planet" DT.
