Saban shakes head at NFL scouting

BATON ROUGE — It’s happening again. The NFL way of classifying college players through times in the 40-yard dash, height, weight, vertical leap and other “measurables.

A New Orleans Saints personnel official said recently that they like receiver Devery Henderson out of LSU more than receiver Michael Clayton out of LSU.

Henderson, who is expected to go in the second round of the NFL draft Saturday, is like some of the receivers expected to go in the first round Saturday ahead of Clayton. He’s significantly faster than Clayton.

LSU defensive tackle Chad Lavalais, meanwhile, is viewed as a bit too short at 6-foot-3 and maybe a little too thick around the middle at 292.

LSU coach Nick Saban, he of many NFL contacts and job offers, is amused at some of the views he’s heard in recent weeks of Clayton and Lavalais.

They remind him of when he was the defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns in the NFL from 1991-94.

He’d be in the war room receiving reports from the Browns’ scouts.

“This guy’s 6-3 and 255, he runs a 4.6 and he vertical jumped a 38, they would tell him.

And Saban would say, “Yeah, I watched him play. He doesn’t make any plays.
