Vilma suspended for the season. Wow.

gregg rosenthal‏@greggrosenthal

Fujita gets 3 game,s Hargrove 8 games, Will Smith four games. NFL announced.

Jason La Canfora‏@JasonLaCanfora

Vilma's suspension starts immediately, the others can participate in OTAs and preseason, then begin serving. I expect all to appeal

Jonathan Vilma banned for year

The NFL suspended four players for their roles in the New Orleans Saints' bounty system, including linebacker Jonathan Vilma for the entire 2012 season.

In addition to Vilma, defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove was suspended eight games, defensive Will Smith four games and linebacker Scott Fujita (now with the Cleveland Browns) three games.

A league investigation found that from 2009-11 New Orleans coaches and players put together a bounty system that paid out improper cash bonuses for hits aimed at knocking opposing players out of games. The NFL says as many as 27 Saints participated.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell already has suspended Saints coach Sean Payton for the 2012 season and fined the team $500,000. Saints former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is suspended indefinitely, New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis begins an eight-game ban after the preseason, and interim coach Joe Vitt begins serves his six-game suspension at the same time.

Payton's suspension began April 16 and runs through the Super Bowl, which, incidentally, is in New Orleans. During that time, Payton may not even have casual, non-football conversations with anyone on any NFL team without at least notifying the league office.

WTF!

sharke 05-02-2012 10:55 AM

the hell?

Hayduke 05-02-2012 10:55 AM

Vilma is done.

RaginCajun83 05-02-2012 10:56 AM

Nothing for Harper? Surprised by that, seems every media outlet talked about him like he was the anti-Christ

sharke 05-02-2012 10:57 AM

guess no more than 8 games was BS

|Mitch| 05-02-2012 10:59 AM

Vilma gone for the year hurts, but it could have been A LOT worse for us...

CharityMike 05-02-2012 10:59 AM

Wow..Godell is such a hypocritical fag!

frydaddy 05-02-2012 11:00 AM

Not surprising.. the whole time these reports were talking about vilma preparing for up to 8 games I figured it would end up being his whole season.. payton was only preparing for a few games too.. the bright side is that its finally come down and only 2 guys still on our roster received suspensions. If forced to, I can live with that

RaginCajun83 05-02-2012 11:01 AM

Look on the bright side, Junior gets to start at least 4 games now

pherein 05-02-2012 11:01 AM

How much you want to bet Hardgrove got 8 games for saying "Farve is done" and his hard play vs the vikings on national TV. Even thou he received no money for those shots. Godell is so full of it.

..and really Vilma a season? while Harrison constantly tells the NFL to go F**k themselves, that ridiculas.

I'm just nervous Goodell isn't done. Like: these are the big ones but there could be more guys suspended a game or two.

Vilma out for the year is brutal. Not so sure Smith is that big of a deal. What do you guys think?

jcp026 05-02-2012 11:02 AM

I think Goddell waits to hear the guesses at what the penalties will be and then takes the most extreme guess...AND DOUBLES IT! Douche.

Ashley 05-02-2012 11:04 AM

Does this really surprise anybody here? RG is a dink

MistaBigXXL 05-02-2012 11:04 AM

Words cannot describe how much this saddens me.

Donuts32 05-02-2012 11:05 AM

Goodell doesn't have any evidence. I swear this dude is the biggest ***** in the world. I hope the NFLPA fights this.

I really don't see Vilma out as brutal, he really hasn't been the same since the injuries. Hawthorne, Lofton, and Wilson still looks promising...

Losing Smith is a bigger deal I think, Gallette is gonna have to step up big time in those 4 games...

I think if he intends on dragging this out any further I may seriously consider not watching NFL Football anymore until he is dethroned as commissioner. This has gone on entirely too long and already his actions border on malicious.. to put it nicely.

Danno 05-02-2012 11:09 AM

Bullpoop.

saints1234 05-02-2012 11:10 AM

Words cant describe how PISSED OFF I AM

Roger D better not step foot in LA or hes going to get it

pherein 05-02-2012 11:14 AM

All Saints fans have to order Super bowl tickets as soon as they are on sale.
Even if the Saints don't make it, I want to see 1000's of Who Dats in the SuperDome to Boo Godell when he gets on the field.

Halo 05-02-2012 11:15 AM

guys and gals, as for Vilma, I think the handwriting was on the wall and the NFL gave the team a heads up. How many middle linebackers do we have on staff after this offseason??

Will Smith and Hargrove hurt, although Smith has become a part-time slacker.

I really thought this was going to be worse and think we got off easy enough.

Now let's get on with the rest of offseason and start camp soon....

lsutigerfan 05-02-2012 11:17 AM

This isn't gonna hurt the team. Wow, I actually expected worse.

73Saint 05-02-2012 11:18 AM

Ok. Can we finally begin to move on from this suckiness? It sucks about Vilma, I can't say that I am surprised though. Hargrove getting 8 tells me the Vikings game is where the supposed "evidence" is coming from. It's BS, we all know it, but it's over now. Let's just hope it galvanizes us as a team and we can come back stronger as a result!!

Who Dat *******!!

SaintsRule11 05-02-2012 11:18 AM

In hindsight I wish we had retained Jo Lonn Dunbar. I guess it's good we got all these top-notch linebackers this season.

Why does Roger Goodell hate us so much?

TheOak 05-02-2012 11:20 AM

Goodells verdicts.

Players that have been spended for an entire season

Johnathan Vilma - Bounty program

Donté Stallworth - Manslaughter - DWI

Makes perfect sense.

I agree Roger DUMBELL better stay out of Los Angeles.... I MEAN LOUISIANA!

just kidding!!!:broccoli:

hagan714 05-02-2012 11:21 AM

ok now the real question. with the money not paid does that go back to the cap or will the nfl hold that from use also. common sense says it is free cap money but i am not second guessing this one.

Hargrove is not even on the team and I don't think losing Will Smith will hurt.

money down, Goodell conveniently misses this years superbowl.

onebyone 05-02-2012 11:24 AM

Are we done with this nightmare yet, or is Goodell going to start suspending fans who liked seeing Favre getting smacked around next?

CORRECT!
If we use the same equation as Goodell and the NFL, then...

:pink: + :monkey: =

:hott:

savoyk 05-02-2012 11:25 AM

Wow! Guess it's time to appeal?

The heads up of Vilma out 2-8 games?! Kind of a far cry from a whole season.

it does when you're a jackass looking for scapegoats

FromMNtoLASt 05-02-2012 11:27 AM

Might be time to cut our ties to Vilma and Smith, use some of the money for Drew and use the rest for more defense - Osi Umenyiora. perhaps ?

TheOak 05-02-2012 11:28 AM

Honstly (puts on face shield)... Cut them both.
Vilma is not what he used to be and Smith is not what what we thought he would be last season.

Danno 05-02-2012 11:28 AM

Yep, I guess this frees up quite a bit of money for Drew.

iceshack149 05-02-2012 11:30 AM

Just keep putting lime juice in my laceration, you schmuck.

I hope that this is over. This has been a miserable, torturous off-season. Let's get back to watching the Saints roll 40+ on teams. September can't come soon enough.

CharityMike 05-02-2012 11:30 AM

Vilma's money is going to be available as soon as his suspension starts..which is now.

Brees deal will be announced this week..I am calling it now!!
