With our second rounders, who do we take. I think we look at maybe Boulware of Florida State and whichever corner falls that far. Hopefully someone like maybe Derrick Strait? What are your thoughts on 2nd round hopefuls?

Got to look at LB\'s....Teddy Lehman, Boulware, Dansby if he slips. As for CB...Strait, Poole, etc. Just need to pick the highest rated LB and CB left by the time our picks come.

We probably should wait a little bit before we rush to judgement on the organization.

Yep. I\'m over it now. Will Smith was rated as a top 10 prospect and the best DE in the draft by most. It\'s definately not a reach and is really a GREAT value at the 18th pick. Kinda like the Deuce McAllister pick a few years ago when we stil had Ricky Williams.

Also, the second round is suppose to have some great talent this year and we have 2 picks.

With 2 solid need picks in the 2nd this can still be a decent draft. Is there still rumour floating around that Horn or Stallworth are being shopped for pick/picks?

I\'d like to see Darryl Smith or Courtney Watson and maybe Straight or Poole or Carrol. I just hope they address MLB with the next pick.

he could\'ve drafted at any position beside DE and i probably would\'ve gave him a benefit of a doubt(wr, lb, dt, ot, og, c, rb, qb, cb, s, or just simply traded down with miami for a 4th rd pick) but in simple words loomis is a idiot

Billy,

I\'m gonna have to disagree with you on this one.

Will Smith is not a GREAT value to us. We are deep and skilled at DE. Duece was no value to us at all that first season. We need help now; are we going to wait and trade one of our DE\'s later? How does that help? Smith is a great player, a top 10 player, we just needed a different 10 ten player. I agree that this pick doesn\'t seem to hurt us, it just doesn\'t help us! We want a winning team this year, not next year. The Rickey/Duece analogy, even if it holds up, cannot make me happy with this pick. We should have moved up or down (we knew Denver was going to take a LB; we needed to be ahead of them as soon as Vilma was taken).

If we wait a little bit then it will be a crappy rush to judgement. So I will full-out charge to judgement! :casstet: I swear being a Saints Fan is starting to wear away what little sanity I have left.

JKool -- Ok, you\'re bringing me down buddy. I\'m trying to make myself feel better. Seriously though, look at it this way:

1. We need help at corner and linebacker.
2. The top rated corners and LB\'s were gone.

Now, we picked up the highest rated player on the board at a GREAT value.

Now, we have 2 picks in the second round and I suspect we will get one of these players:

1. Teddy Lehman, Oklahoma (6-1½, 240)
Had a complete workout at the combine, running his 40s in 4.53 and 4.57, the short shuttle in 4.06 and the three-cone drill in 6.91. He also had a 34½-inch vertical jump and 26 strength lifts. Worked out again at Oklahoma\'s Pro Day, where he ran but did not lift or jump. Had a very good position workout. Played linebacker and running back in high school, and also punted. Very productive high school player with more than 400 tackles and seven interceptions. Played as a true freshman in 2000 at Oklahoma and started the next three years. Had 117 tackles in 2003. A player with great character. Does whatever is needed. Plays on all special teams. Has outstanding competitiveness. Can control point, and play in space. The type of person you want on your team.

2. Chris Gamble, Ohio State (6-1¼, 198)
Gamble ran two 40s for times of 4.50 and 4.55. He had a 39-inch vertical, a 9-foot-10 long jump, 16 reps, a 4.25 short shuttle and a 6.89 three-cone drill. He worked out a second time at Ohio State on April 5 and ran 4.61, 4.57 and 4.53 in the 40. His high school team won the state championship in basketball and played in the state championship in football. He lined up as a wide receiver in high school and also started out as a wideout at Ohio State. He played as a true freshman in 2001, started all 14 games in 2002 at wide receiver and six of them at cornerback. In 2003 he had three interceptions and played receiver as well. Gamble, obviously, has a lot of athletic ability, but he needs to work on his technique and on his defensive skills in general. He does have great skill already. He can also return kicks for an NFL team.

3. Will Poole, USC (5-10 3/8, 194)
Poole worked out March 24 and weighed in 10 pounds lighter than he did at before (he said he had been ill). He ran two 40s for times of 4.65 and 4.66, had a 28½-inch vertical, a 9-foot-7 long jump, a 4.26 short shuttle and a 7.06 three-cone drill. Poole played quarterback, running back and defensive back in high school. He broke his foot and missed most of his senior year. He redshirted in 1999 at Boston College, started 10 games in 2000 at cornerback, was suspended in 2001 for violation of team rules, transferred to Ventura Junior College in 2002 and had six blocked kicks and seven interceptions. Then he made his way to USC, where he started 11 games for the Trojans at cornerback and had seven interceptions. He has coverage skills and seems to play faster than his times indicate. Devard Darling of Washington State ran past him several times in a game, but Poole was supposed to have a tight back. He will tackle and make plays.

4. Michael Boulware, Florida State (6-2, 225)
Did some things at the combine, clocking a time of 3.92 in the short shuttle and 6.89 in the three-cone drill. Worked out at FSU\'s Pro Day and ran his 40s in 4.50 and 4.47, had a 39½-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-2 long jump and did 15 strength reps. Played wide receiver, running back, linebacker, cornerback and safety in high school. Played as a true freshman in 2000 at Florida State but did not start. Started 14 games in 2001 at strong-side linebacker and was a starter in 2002 and 2003. Looks more like a basketball player with thin arms and legs. Good worker but needs to be pushed. Has excellent speed for linebacker position. Has good ball skills and good hands. Not as nasty as a linebacker should be. His brother, Peter, plays for the Baltimore Ravens. Could be a big hit if he gets linebacker toughness and more strength. Recorded 238 tackles over the past two years.

And there\'s more QUALITY out there than that. These are who I\'m hoping for though. It could turn out to be a GREAT draft, depending on what falls our way.

Sorry bud, I didn\'t mean to bring you down.

I suppose I am just frustrated with this pick. Smith is not a bad choice; it is just one that doesn\'t make much sense. Teams are trading 1st rounders next year just to move up a few spots; we should have traded!

I agree with both CBs and LBs gone, we needed to take BAP. However, we should have moved when we saw what BAP was going to end up in our laps (since his value to us is so much less than it would have been to another team).

This pick will not effect our draft grade, since we can still draft excellent players in the next two rounds (ones that will help) - on this point I agree. I am just so confused by this move, and a bit cheesed that it seemed so unnecessary.

PS - I think Poole and Lehman are my favorites for our second round picks. However, if somone can tell me who the next best OT and the next best RB are, I\'ll put money on those are the picks we make. :casstet:

Depends on who\'s doing the ranking...

Here\'s one expert\'s ranking and some info:

Quote:

1. Will Smith, Ohio State (6-2¾, 275)
Did not work out at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Had a complete workout at Ohio State\'s Pro Day, where he weighed in at 267. Ran his 40s in 4.60 and 4.58 and had a 38½-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-9 long jump and he benched 225 pounds a total of 30 times. Had 20 sacks his senior year of high school. Played basketball for three years and ran track (sprints and long jump) in high school in Utica, N.Y. Played in all 12 games as a true freshman in 2000 at Ohio State and started the next three years. Makes plays all over the field. He can drop in coverage or rush the passer. A very competitive player. Works to get off blocks. Strong player who plays with good leverage. Strong explosive upfield rusher. Very good person who works hard. No off-the-field problems. Can play in space or with hand on the ground. I don\'t think you will ever have a problem with him. Has a very good NFL future.

1a. Kenechi Udeze, Southern California (6-2 7/8, 281)
Did not work out at the combine. Had a complete workout at USC\'s Pro Day, where he weighed in at 273. Ran his 40s in 4.77 and 4.81 and had a 39-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-5 long jump, 25 strength lifts and ran 4.73 in the short shuttle and 7.77 in the three-cone drill. Played both offensive line and defensive line in high school. Had 27 sacks in final two seasons. Weighed 355 pounds in high school and had over 30 percent body fat. Had a hard time bending over to tie his shoes, and now has 8 percent body fat. Lost 80 pounds by the time 2001 season started in USC. Was redshirted in 2000 at USC. Started 10 games in 2001 and started every game in 2002 and 2003. Had 16½ sacks in 2003. Plays with high intensity. Plays strongside defensive end (left) and does a very good job against the run. First name means \"God\'s love will always be with me.\" Mother raised four children. Brother is a lawyer and another attends Carleton College in Minnesota.

O.K. everyone needs to chill ! What I have heard on other boards is alot of people think we are gonna trade Howard to the Raiders for Charles Woodson. That is the only thing that would save this mess.
