Drayton Florence in the NFC South?

Drayton Florence in the NFC South? - NFC South Blog - ESPN

very good corner, whos not comanding much money..... Would be terrific depth without breaking the bank. Would you make this move?

QBREES9 05-04-2012 10:57 PM

Bring him in. Can't hurt

dizzle88 05-05-2012 06:55 AM

Yeah why not, I believe he's a pretty good player and for low price can't hurt us

hagan714 05-05-2012 08:30 AM

he has some tread left on him. lets kick the tires

Danno 05-05-2012 04:02 PM

How much will he cost?
Is he any better than what we already have?
If he's our 3rd/4th CB, will he play special teams?

Spotrack shows that he would've been making $4M and $5M in 2012 and 2013 respectively, but I'm not sure for how little he'd be willing to sign with another team, and one with a good chance of making playoffs and more?

Oh, and Bills' buyout was $1.3M.

Drayton Florence Contract, Salaries, and Transactions

I wouldn't be against at least giving him a look-see and a chance to compete for a roster spot, if he would be willing to sign a cap friendly contract.

Really? They would have taken this guy over Asante Samuel?
Sorry, that's not a real question. The answer is no, no they would not.

Florence had 50 tackles and 3 picks last year, Samuel 34 and 3. Same age and Florence is bigger

Florence was a full time starter and played almost twice as many minutes as Samuel last year. The Eagles had Rodgers-Cromartie and Asomugha, They relegated Asante Samuel to nickelback and have been looking to deal him since last year. They obviously kept him out of the game as much as possible so that he couldn't hit any bonuses or whatever. Asante Samuel is a top-10 corner, this other guy is middle of the pack.

EDIT: 4 Pro Bowls, 3 First Team, Interception leader 2 years running vs. What exactly? A guy who got released by the Bills?

QBREES9 05-05-2012 10:07 PM

He is also an ex-Charger. They seem to work out well for us.

HMMMM....Last time we got somebody from Buffalo he was a beast. Enter Jabari Greer. Maybe the Greer Florence combo would be a nice fit?

nicebush25 05-06-2012 12:04 PM

I don't know, 33 y/o and only made four appearances last season having had issues with his hamstring.

He has nice size, but I'm wary of him in all other aspects.

darstep 05-09-2012 09:26 AM

There will be lots of vets sending up flares before the season starts.
I'm with nicebush25 on this one, I wouldn't spend another dime until Brees was locked.
Then I would fish around for what I could snag with the leftover nickels and pennies.

hagan714 05-09-2012 03:20 PM

agreed breess first and then go for cheap butt vets out looking for work maybe

After all, we're talking about the 4th/5th CB. That should be a vet minimum player. With all the young guys on the roster we may already have our 5th CB, and maybe even our 6th if desired.

I hope you're true, and I do think that they have some promising young guys and it'll be an interesting fight between them for the roster spots for sure.

Still, a lot is riding on Patrick being able to fill Porter's shoes, but I did like what I saw out of him last season, so hopefully he'll be a happy surprise this coming season - the Saints could sure use one of those.

Was it Darren Sharper that said we'll be extremely impressed with Johhny Patrick next year?

I know someone stated that he improved tremendously over the course of the season just a month or so ago.

Adder: Here it is. It was Greer...

Quote:

Interim head coach Joe Vitt, asked in a predraft interview about cornerback potentially being one of the team's biggest needs this year, quickly pointed out that the team is excited about Patrick.

And veteran corner Jabari Greer said he "definitely" believes that Patrick's growth last year helped the Saints' front office and coaching staff feel better about losing Porter and Torrence.

"The coaches are even speaking to him in meetings this year. That's a good sign. That's better than when they're just talking around you," Greer cracked. "He didn't get a lot of opportunities early last season. But at the end of the year he made some big hits and some big plays, and really showed what an asset he can be. He raised a lot of eyebrows and caught a lot of the veterans' attention.

"We're seeing that same growth we saw with Patrick (Robinson) from Year 1 to Year 2."

The CB version we saw in 2009 and 2010? Yes

The NB version we saw in 2011? Not at all.

I agree Porter was not impressive last year, being reduced to a nickle-back. Spagnoulo likes bigger press corners anyway, so I don't think that losing Porter was a significant loss in the new system...

I forgot about his preference, but Tracy could bring it for a little guy. He was a lot tougher than given credit for.

|Mitch| 05-09-2012 09:22 PM

I wonder if we let him walk by choice, or was it a money issue?

hagan714 05-11-2012 06:32 AM

tough cap year for sure.

Well, I didn't see a lot of toughness in those half-hearted attempts to tackle the incoming players' legs, but the same could be said about other guys on the Saints' backfield as well.
