New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees expressed frustration and disappointment with a lack of progress in talks toward a long-term contract during a Wednesday afternoon interview with WWL-AM in New Orleans.

"It's extremely frustrating for me, but here we are," Brees said. "I know I'm certainly committed to getting a long-term deal, as I have been throughout this entire process."

I just listened to the wwl interview with him. I can see he is a little upset, but come on it's going to get done soon. Were talking the next Louisiana purchase going down here

Beastmode 05-16-2012 08:08 PM

I wish it was like the LA Purchase, that was a steal of a deal.

73Saint 05-16-2012 08:19 PM

Man, he sounded pissed. But as expected, handled it like a total class act. I just wish I knew what the &*%$ was going on. Nothing positive at all from listening to that interview, except for the fact that it made me lose my appetite.

I think I heard him say he and his agent were on the same page.

QBREES9 05-16-2012 09:24 PM

It will get done.

The ultimate deadline for Brees and the Saints to reach a long-term agreement is July 16. After that, Brees can only sign a one-year deal. When asked if he would sign the one-year, $16.3 million franchise tag offer if a deal isn't reached by then, Brees said, "I'm not even gonna think about that at this point."

$16.3 million?...Chump change.

He's not the only one frustrated!

NOLA54 05-16-2012 10:52 PM

Frustrated? I think we are all frustrated.

dizzle88 05-17-2012 03:04 AM

Brees says he's been comitted throughout to get a deal done....

If that's true why did you reject the last two offers we put on the table, both of which would have made him the highest paid player

This is really getting on my nerves, youd think after the offseason we've had brees would be the one supporting us by being there, team friendly....ha

Given Brees' importance to the Saints offense, his role in the New Orleans community, and how experienced his agent Tom Condon is at negotiating quarterback contracts, it's surprising that Brees remains without a deal.

Really?!

It's surprising that when a turd like Condon is involved that negotiations drag on... really?!

I think exactly the opposite, I would've been extremely surprised if the negotiations hadn't dragged on with Condon involved and with all the other issues revolving around this deal and the Saints in general.

again, I just spend 75$ to fill up my tank with gas. Im driving an 11 yr old pickup truck. Kinda hard to sympathize with someone who doesnt want to work for millions of dollars.

listening to a baton rouge sports station last night sounding out on the brees contract delay, it really got my blood boiling, only because it brought back memories of the old days in the meacom ara. the frustration in them years with contract disputes only landed up in trades of the best players we'd had on the roster. back then it was a no brainer just to cut a *****in player than to let them get the upper hand. and thats whats so hard to accept with this brees contract. this man made tom benson so dammed much richer over the last six years and even gave the team there first superbowl, it bought him an nba basketball team. so now can u see why drew don't deserve a part of the house take. wtf is the freakin problem with tom. mickey and and cpas. he's going to finnish his carrer here and we sure would like to keep a person like drew in the organization forever after. he wants to sucure his future in his time. just like we'd do the same in our time. its not going to break the bank, we bought 2 1st rounders in last years draft and never lost sleep over that. is mickey more involved with his own troubles more than the brees contract? i'm just fumming . i hope its done before i press post. because i'm going to off next time. lol

I can sympathize with a lot of what you said above, but it's really not that black and white.

I don't think it's a matter of them not willing to pay him what he wants, but mainly how to construct a contract which will fit under the salary cap and still not handcuff the franchise in terms of other players they can bring in.

Also, because of the new CBA and the rookie salary grades involved, low 1st round picks are not that expensive anymore - that's why we're seeing so many trade ups in the draft, since the 1st rounders won't brake the bank anymore.

They'll get it done in time, but not without compromises from both sides.

saintfan 05-17-2012 10:49 AM

My math skills suck - so I am prepared for one of you brilliant people to correct me here, but this is how I look at...

One Million in the bank at 3% = 30 thousand dollars a year

Times 16 is 480 thousand dollars

a year

in interest

I'm sure he has financial people that would actually squeeze more than that per year our of 16 million.

That's a LOT of money. I get that he wants all he can get piled on to what he already has. I don't begrudge him that...even a little...

UNTIL he fails to show up at camp. If that happens I'm going to be an angry young man...

but until then I support his efforts to get all he can, down to the last penny. I would do the same thing...but I wouldn't hold out unless I were under paid relative to my peers, and Drew is going to be far from under paid relative to his peers regardless of what contract he ultimately signs.

That's my .02 on the subject. Zooey agrees with me.

QBREES9 05-17-2012 11:50 AM

Get everything you can today, for you do not know what tomorrow brings.

This is exactly what I am thinking, too. And that the holdup is that when both sides say the same thing, "how to construct a contract which will fit under the salary cap and still not handcuff the franchise" I think that's where Condon and Loomis are saying two different sets of numbers and have two different definitions of what that means.
