3rd round pick trade a good idea?

more than likely, the redskins are going to be pretty good this year, so the second round pick we recieved for next year will probably be in the mid to late 50s. are we that loaded with talent that we can afford to sit around and make plans for the future when there were players like lasauer and ware that could come into a weak secondary and contribute? it's amazing that our weakest position is our back 7 on defense and we only used 1 draft pick to bolster it!

There was nobody worth our 3rd rounder, except maybe Will Poole. Trading it away for a 2nd next year was a smart thing IMO. At least we have a chance for a better player there.

Say what you will about Haslet, but this move shows a commitment to the team long term. I don\'t really know if there was anyone else worth picking in the 3rd round at our spot (obviously the redskins thought there was), but IMHO it\'s always a good idea to get a 2d rd pick for a 3d. So we have to wait a year? That doesn\'t hurt us any.

That\'s a strong move from the coach and (possibly) GM that might not be around next year to reap the benefits of that deal.

Will Poole would have been worth a 3rd round pick, and he would have been able to help this year, not 2005.

sure he may have been able to \'help\' but a shut down corner is that the Doctor requires, we might as well go with what we got and sign Carter again... add some pressure on the qb.

You have to look at value with the pick... you can\'t pick someone just because he is a body that might help out... because you may end up cutting him or someone else for that body and you wasted a pick. At least at DT and DE we have possible upgraded and moving great athletes around and or trade bait.

Well I guess with your logic, we should have selected Ahmad Carroll with Will Smith still on the board.

Cornerback is the position where NFL talent and college talent has its largest gap. There was a reason Poole slipped so far.

Outside of first round corners, can you think of any last year that made any major contributions to their teams???

I think it was a good Front office move. It seems like for the longest we were the ones giving up our second and first round picks. It makes sense when you can gain one once in a while. The casual fan doesn\'t have foresight like that though.

true... true...

I mean also have to keep in mind there is always a next year and we put ourselves in good position to get better players (3 in first 2 rounds). Lets hope the deadskins resurface and not get in the playoffs so the pick is even better. I know they look good/great on paper.

Usually you want your first and second round picks to come in a play, you don\'t expect that out of your 3rd guy,

I agree with your assessment of the CB position. Ricky Manning (3rd round) started in the superbowl though.

Ricky Manning, Charles Tillman, Rashean Mathis, both Pats rookie corners (one was movied to saftey, tho). However, the point is still there. We should of taken Poole, but it should of been in the 4th, not the 3rd. And we didn\'t have a 4th rounder, so that couldn\'t happen.

From Coach Haslett

Q: Why did USC CB Will Poole fall so far?

A: \"I don\'t know Will, I just watched him on field. I saw a guy who was very technique sound, a good tackler as any corner who has been around for awhile. But after about 20 yards he lacked speed. You don\'t verify that until you see him run. He ran the 40 and I went out there with Mickey and Rick and a bunch of our coaches, and he ran a 4.84 and a 4.75. And you have corners who are running 4.3 and 4.4. So his value dropped. He didn\'t work out very well and they said he was sick, which could have been the reason why. Then he did another workout and his numbers were a little bit better, but not enough to get him up in the first three rounds.\"
