Garrett Hartley and John Kasay will have open competition for Saints’ kicker job

Saints’ kicker Garrett Hartley was one of the league’s premier kickers in 2010, before missing all of 2011 with injuries. Proving just how uncertain things are for kickers, Hartley will now have to beat John Kasay, who did a solid job in his absence last year, to keep his starting job and likely his roster spot, this according to special teams coordinator Greg McMahon.

Pulling for Hartley. Hopefully he's done with injuries.

Look-in-the-mirror, do-or-die time for Hartley: suspension, injury-prone, and now facing a 42 year old to win the job.

Could this possibly be a money-saving measure because of the Brees situation?

It'll cost us 2.4 million to cut him, then we have to pay Kasey.

It only costs us 1.75 million to keep him.

Hope Garrett doesn't hurt himself swinging his leg!
AGAIN!

We got lucky with Kasay. Very lucky. Hartley will be the man for years to come. He is money when he's healthy. Remember he still holds a Superbowl record for kicks over 40 yards.

I just hope hartley's head is ok, i'm more worried about that than his leg.

Hartley, Super Bowl winning Kicker.

Exactly.....if its not an injury then its his confidence...which always leads to us bringing in kicker over 40 to help him get his confidence up......am I the only one a little bothered by that? I mean the guy has a hell of a leg but he'll miss a couple of chip shots and bug out. LOL. He'll be ok tho. I'd rather have the guy that got us to the SB than an aging guy with limited range.

But if we could some how get Janikowski from the Raiders.....I doubt we would ever have a 4 & out....dude tied dempsy's record & even when he's hurting is blasting 40-45yd FGs. LOL

I like both but would love for Kasey to stick around another year. I know thats blasphemy to some.

TheOak 05-23-2012 06:51 AM

Hartley:

1. In three year in the NFL has yet to play 16 games in one season.

2. FG % has been on the decline since year 1.

3. In 2010 he was only 66% from 20-29 yards.

4. In 2010 FG% across the NFL he was 28th.

5. In 2010 FG% 20-29 yards he was 38th.

I do not see where he is "Money".... Actually his leg has cost us in a few vital games... OT Chip shot from the 19 yard line miss against Atlanta ring a bell?

We beat the Colts 31-17... How did Hartley win a Super Bowl? 31-9 still equals 22-17 victory.

Where in the hell is all of this love coming from?

Danno 05-23-2012 07:58 AM

Not a big sHartley fan. He cost us some big games. His miss in the ATL game cost us HFA in 2010. With a week off to heal our team, we win it all that year.

I'd rather have Kasay, but I'm afraid his contract will force us to keep him.

Hartley's Stat's look bad he got some kicks in crutial times but he has a lot to prove. To be an elite kicker he has a long way to go. When this starts I will be glad to know we have Kasay.

jeanpierre 05-26-2012 06:24 AM

Kasay. Take the hit on the cap and be done with it already...

But open competition - it's the American Way...

...except when a bunch of Tammany Hall or Daley Chicago Machine types have got the fix in...

Cruize 05-26-2012 06:37 AM

It would not be impossible to keep both. I'm never nervous with Kasay. One of the games all-time bests. Hartley having to prove himself may be the final motivation he needs. It's Hartley's job to earn. Kasay won't lose it.

Great snapshot point - but, if playing in the NFL and getting paid like that is not enough motivation...

well, then Hartlet needs to join the Ma-rines and spend some time with R. Lee Ermey...
